Reman 7mgte with 140 miles.

I finally worked out all the kinks a few days ago and started driving it everyday. I went out to start it this morning and it struggled for a sec but fired up. I took it for a drive and when I took off from a stop light it died. I don't know if I killed it or if it just sputtered off, but it died. I pulled it onto the shoulder and poked around. I thought I'd pull the plugs and check them. So I pulled the 5, 3, and 2 plugs looked at them and put them back in. Car started up perfect. WTF? It's also smoking (gray) on decel, only if it's in vacuum though. If I coast in neutral it doesn't do it.

So...
Gray smoke on deceleration
Won't start
Removed plugs and put them back in (I didn't do anything to them, just looked at them.)
Car started fine

Plug wires are all plugged in nice and snug.

Ground wire from coil pack? I don't see anything coming off and grounding to anything.

I went out today and tried starting it, and it was successful. However after a couple minutes it just died. It was idling in neutral. Upon trying to restart, it showed the same symptoms as before, cranking and not starting. I pulled plug #1 and looked at it. Here's a pic.

I put it back in and tried starting, and no go. I then pulled it back out, tried starting it with the plug connected to the plug wire to check to see if it would spark, and it started. I shut it off, plugged it back in and it started no problem.

Also, the smoke is bluish gray. Only on deceleration when in gear.

The coil pack ground (from the plate to block) is a field ground...the ground to fire the coil packs is a different circuit through the harness.

Next time it does this, wiggle your CPS wires and try to restart.

Another possibility is the plug wires.

Do check your CPS wires, wiggle them around, see if anything happens differently.

Also try looking at your plug wires while cranking during the night. If you've got a bad connection or cracked boot or something it will arc and you will see it. If you feel brave you can feel in and around the wires/boots while the car is running. It might give you a little shock if your wires are bad, but nothing lethal.
