Going a bit off topic here (not wanting to start a new thread) but seeing as we are on the subject of ignition. I have an intermittent problem, my car will stumble every now and again it might do it 2 days in a row then it might not do it for a week. When it stumbles the tach drops down rappidly than back up to engine speed could this be caused by a bad earth in the ignitor as discribed in the link a few posts up?? All my grounds are good, my plug wires are all below 10k ohms resistance, plugs are less than 3 months old, coils are all withing tsrm spec, no codes although I did get the check engine light come on a few months back for a split second code 14 reset the ecu and in 2000+ miles of driving it has never come back.

That would likely be a mistake. What are the odds of all three coil packs going out at once? And why would you shotgun something so easy to test? Ohm out the primaries as per the TRSM or test them using your battery and two wires. That said if you're not getting any tach flicker you need to look at the CPS or igniter. And I'm assuming the CEL comes on when you turn the key.

I found a set of coilpacks locally, put em in, and ignition!

However, Sounds like there's a wood pecker in the back of the engine bay. The best i could figure out where the sound is coming from is the rear of the head. Its not a constant sound, real intermittent, but it does speed up as revs increase.

Hey JJ I think you know I have respect for you and your expertise, but why all the attitude? I mean I know you get tired of repeating yourself, and we both know that not everyone is at the same skill level here on SM, but (and really no offence meant) Im pretty sure Tim could do without the testy replies. He didnt seem to take offence but just reading the thread bothered me.

This goes for anyone, in any thread. If you are going to bother to reply at all, can we drop the attitude please?

I dont know, maybe not my place to say, but it bothered me, so I got it off my chest.

Attitude? Didn't feel there was much. I tried to help and couldn't so I gave up. I do that with lots of people once I reach the conclusion they either haven't the technical expertise to follow directions or simply refuse to. I also expect people asking for help to accurately answer questions posed to them assuming they answer at all. It's hard enough to shoot problems over the Net without playing 20 questions. Nor does anyone like to have their time wasted.

I could have simply ignored his problem you know, as I do with many others. Then there's the fact I was unsuccessful at resolving it. It's the one and only reason I'm here you know. Also keep in mind if you're bothered by what people post others just might be bothered by things too. That said, I'll take your comments into consideration.

Yea, its a bit annoying. But I really don't care. If you want to be pompous and high and mighty, whatever, as long as you're contributing. All I care about is figuring out whats wrong, fixing it, and learning from it.

While I know my way around cars, I've been around enough cars to know that each system is different. With all this damned troubleshooting i'm doing, hopefully I wont' have to come back on SM and deal with princes like JJ.

Lol, nothing is going to happen next. I have better things to do than get into a pissing match with some kid. Cars may be different but the basics are all the same. If he knew his way around them he wouldn't be doing any of the things he's doing. He would know how to measure an O2 sensor, how to troubleshoot basic electrical circuits, wouldn't be shotgunning parts, ect. And if he knew his way around cars his wouldn't have had such simple problems as badly leaking valve covers and cracked coils to begin with. Nor would his car have broken down. Ah well, such is life. He needn't worry about dealing with me again.

I dunno, maybe I was wrong JJ. I know you know your stuff. I have definately valued you input into problems I've had, but yeah you come off a little high and mighty sometimes. I dunno if its all like SD made it out to be, but...meh, its not really my problem.

Tim, you know if I can help I will. Im putting my money on CPS.
