If you still have the stock audio system from a 18 year old car it's time for some new stuff!

What kind of "static" did you get? Did you hear kinda a "hiss" or "pop", or did you hear your speaker cutting in and out?

As Anth stated, it could be a bad wire connections (especially if your wires have deteriorated at all since 1989), however it could also be blown speakers... When you have your music on, if you put your ear up to one of the left side speakers, can you hear ANYTHING at all coming from them (even the faintest sound)?

When I took my doors apart, my front speakers had NO surround left, they were pretty nasty... They never technically "blew" (fried voicecoils), but I'm sure if I pushed them for much longer they would have.

sounds like your wires may have crossed. take out the radio and play it for about 5 mins....if its really hot, there is a chance your wires for the left side may be touching each other...

The easiest way to diagnose a problem like this is the process of elimination. Pull out the speaker that isn't working. Hook it up to your home stereo or something that you know is good. If it doesn't work, you know it's the speaker. If it does....

Pull out the deck. Find the wires coming from the back of the deck that run to that speaker. Hook up a set of good speaker wires from the back of the deck to the speaker. If that works, it's your wiring. If not, it's the deck or balance control.

oh yeah, its actually an occassional hiss then one day its just died along with the sound, but the right side is fine...
i used to own a nissan z (rip)and their speakers have a built in amp in them,

Sounds like either the speakes fried or the headunit's shot (or potentially the radio amp fried and put high voltage out to the speakers frying them as well). I'd use this as an opportunity to get a decent radio and a new set of speakers in there. Wiring should be fine (except potentially at the ends). If you don't want to blow money on 2 pairs of speakers, buy one pair, put them up front and take your rears out for now. Most people never miss 'em.

Both fronts on mine didn't work after my stupid procedure :) I possibly blew my HU amps by myself :D Yess, and there will go like 500$ if the electrician can't repair it:D

btw im changing all four speakers and yeah it looks like the balancer on my deck is the culprit behind the malfunction... ive checked the car's wires for continuity and tested the speakers on a mini component in my room and they still have some life in them.

ill try to keep the system as simple as possible while im still doing some searching on amps and other supporting items
