Check your grounds. Even if they "look" good, pull 'em, put some steel wool to the contact points until they shine. The auto tranny has a ground wire on it that you can get to from under the car (not sure about the 5spd). There is also a ground under the console. I cleaned the ground under my console and the rear wiper started working (??). Every ground I come across gets cleaned. If you see a check engine light, pull the code. Might give you a clue. Also, the indicator lights that are illuminated on the dash at the same time or at odd times are probably significant. Look it up in the TSRM. In most chapters, there are troubleshooting tips. Often I will see something like if this indicator light is on, plus this one, then it means such-and-such.

Adobe Acrobat will let you search all the files of the TSRM at one time. VERY handy to have!

I had the same problem with my 86.5 auto tranny( no reverse lights). It also wouldnt start occasionally until I ran the shifter thru a couple times. Turned out to be the Neutral Start switch, for both problems. New one fixed the problems. couldn't do it myself, too tight under there by the exhaust pipe.

I hope Im not hijacking..... but I am doing my manual swap and I was wondering where the splicing takes place? I know we have to run the blue wire from the neutral switch harness plug to the reverse switch (red wire) is that done on the ECU side or tranny side or is it just a jumper splice into it?

The speed signal plug yellow wire gets spliced to reverse light yellow wire .. again is this done on the ECU side or Tranny side of the wiring?

any clarification would help

I already know about the neutral switch black and white wire splice on tranny side wiring.

Sorry for threadjacking.... I couldnt reply to older posts concerning wiring.

I also unfortunately have joined the club of no reverse lights which irritates me.

If you don't mind, can you describe the ground points you mentioned, meaning, I would not know where to begin looking for ground points to investigate and attack with steel wool. :) Thanks.
