my 89 turbo automatic idles/revs fine, but when i put it in drive, or reverse nothing happens. when i press down the gas in neutral or park it revs very well. when in drive, all it does is idle, even when the pedal is floored

nothing in reverse, or in any other gears. 1000 rpm in drive with pedal floored. plenty of rpm's in park and in neutral

I had the same problem in my 87 toyota supra turbo. but I replaced the torque converter which was a pita and then it drove very good after I replaced that.

do a stall test for me,

in low, with e-brake set, and foot on brake give it full throttle, for about 5 seconds, and record the rpm, do this again in reverse,

if the motor is being stalled, means the one way clutch is good i belive, and means that the clutch pack ci is bad, and the torque convert is good,?

do the stall and i'll talk to my instructor about your problem in class tomorrow.

er.. no.

silence: So, you can free-rev the car all you want in park or neutral, but as soon as you put it in gear, it won't rev regardless of how much gas you give it? What does it do when you press down on the gas? sputter, die, or attempt to rev?
I'll admit, I don't know what it is. But, I'm not a drivabililty tech... at the same time, I really would like to know what it is for my own knowledge.

just spoke to my instructor,

he says it sounds like the reverse clutch pack is burnt up and frozen together, and sounds like either when first gear clutch pack comes on or a forward clutch pack, that it locks the tranny up,

he said try to floor it in reverse, and if it rev's up thats shold be the sceniaro,

either way, he said tranny need's to come out and be rebuilt.

He said the car idles when floored in drive. If the tranny was locked up as you say, then the engine would rev up to the stall speed of the torque converter. So either the original post was misleading (viz. the engine won't go above idle in drive) or the diagnosis needs to focus on why the engine makes no power.

According to the original post #1, it does not rev in drive or reverse.

logic says, if it worked fine before you replaced the cps, and now it doesnt. you should start by looking at the cps

try this
http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34549

hhmm.. well yes it worked fine before, after i changed the HG. drove it for about 20 miles, and ran the motor for about 5 hours, but one day it wouldnt start, so i took it in, and my mechanic said the cps was bad. he replaced the cps. i was able to drive it home, barely. he told me the injectors were bad, so i replaced those.

when in park or neutral, it revs like crazy. as many rps as i want. while in drive or reverse, or in low, nothing. no change in the idle.
there was never a transmission issue, but that doesnt mean there couldnt be one. might be tourque converter?
