That's definitely the reason. The ECU needs both the MAP and IAT to correctly determine airflow into the engine.

As for finding one your best bet is someone parting a 1jz.

Yeah but you can tune the VPC, you can't tune the stock ECU.

Who knows what temperature baseline the stock ECU uses for computing airflow. If the ECU is tuned to run at 80F and it's 70F out, without an IAT you're going to run rich.

The map sensor could definitely be contributing to the problem, but running without an IAT especially in such a varied climate doesn't make sense.

Toyota ECU's in general usualy go to a baseline of -40 something so its dumping all that fuel for polar bear country. They are typicaly all wired the same its just a matter of finding one to plug the hole in the intake. You might try a 4 cyl 97-01 camry IAT, they fit into the airbox kinda like the 1jz. Just my 2cents.

The 1JZ one is in the intake manifold, not the air box. It needs to be to account for heating/cooling of the turbo and IC.

2JZ IAT sensors are the same as 1JZ sensors. I think they're like $40 new from the dealership.

the wires on mine snapped off from age, and the car does not have a weird idle. But I will be investigating where the difference will happen when replaced.
