Did you take the tails off to do them?

I bought some ClearCoat and VHT, started to take everything apart then quit. I got pissed off 'cuz the tails weren't coming off.

VHT should look exactly the same as professionally done if you just do it right.... this is a good guide:

has anyone ever tried to take the housing apart and spray them from the inside? that would eliminate the need for clearcoat im guessing.

I took my pre89 tails apart and coated the insides with just straight black paint to give them a double round tail/3 stripe signal pattern and I thought they looked great. No worries about uneven coating or getting scratches. I did the same with my 89+ tails and while the sides came out great the middle section is indeed coated inside with refective silver paint. I found no good way to get this paint off easily without destroying the lens so I ended up "nightshading" that section to "match". If you are doing 89+ just get the outsides done, and if doing pre89 its not that hard to do the insides.

Yea i took em off but im not going to for the clear coat... I don't see any reason they need to be off, just tape em off good and shoot the spray around eye level , just watch out for runs do to the fact they are vertical instead of horizontal during paint!!!

If any thing spray em and if you dont like the out come wipe it off with alcohol when still wet!!!

It is so easy to nightshade.... Just dont do too much at one time light even coats!!!

I did my own tails with duplicolor black then wetsanded them then cleared em. This is wat they looked like when they were done.

ummmmm...black paint on your tail lights? Maybe its just me but I like it when people can see my tails and stops. Just kinda a safety thing ya know? Yeah, I know you are gonna say that you can still see them when lit up, but I bet in the daytime its almost impossible to see the brake lights. Im surprised you dont get pulled over for that.

Not anymore they don't. Now they don't do anything than a normal incandescent bulb with no reflector...

Time to get some E-codes. Those lights are trash to begin with, and you just made them even worse.
