thats what a flux core wire is i do believe. i personally can weld just about anything with any method of welding i.e. brazing, mig, tig...i have never really been a fan of ''gas-less'' welding, the welds often come out nasty looking and harder to work with.

But like Jetlock said you need to practice on some material about the same thickness as the quarter panel or patch panels so you can get the settings on the machine where they need to be so you are not blowing big holes in your car

lol alrightg thanks for the help...i got this as a present so i wanna learn how to weld now...tryna get certified but cant find any schools around here to learn more...oh yea...threw this one the only options i am looking at is wire feed speed and min amp..and max amp..it hink or whatever...as for 18-14 gauge metal thickness it says i should use low..63 amps...thicker than 14 gauge is 90 amp...

Sheilding gas, usually CO2, that runs through the nozzel when you pull the trigger.

Innersheild flux core,(gasless) runs like shit. For auto body work, you need .023 solid steel wire which requires a sheilding gas, I use CO2. Check out some of Lincoln's small welders. They range from 120V to single phase 220V, and are amazing little machines.

the welds on a gas-less welding setup will be ugly compared to a gas set up if you have a junk car start practicing on it, what will it hurt, just make sure you take the precautions before to make sure you dont catch anything on fire cuz it wont take much.

it just comes down to the quality of the welds

O yea dont look at the light lol...unless you have a helmet on

Flux core means gasless ;
Not true. There are innersheild cored wires,(gasless), and outersheild cored wires,(gas).

Either way, any fluxcore is a bad choice for thin material. Plus, the extra heat of the fluxcore will warp the quarter panel badly.

alright cool...other than apperance would the quality be the same...like penetration and life of the weld staying on there...im gonna be sending it out or whatever primering over it...any input on that??..

Not true....

I'm aware of that but you're splitting hairs. The term flux core is generally accepted to mean gasless and that's what his welder is. You should have known that just from the machine's description. I'll also point out having better equipment can hamper skill development, especially if one is a beginner.

OP: Try it and see. Do it in a wind-less area. I mig thin material without gas, no problem. However I won't argue real shielding is better and your machine is little more than a toy. You'll eventually want to move up.

Hehe, way back when, my old man was welding up a rust hole in the door sil of my old car and set the interior carpet alight. I didn't know not to trust him near my car at the time :)

OP - you might want to grab some thick scrap steel and get some good welds under your belt first. You'll know a good weld once you've done one. From there, get some scrap thin sheet, about the same thickness as the car panels, and take to it with the welder. There's a good chance you'll blow holes through it. Refine your welder settings so that you don't blow so many holes, then practice until you know how not to blow holes. Even tacking can put holes in thin metal, so its good to familiarise yourself with it.

Welding isn't a hobby for me, it's my job. Having better epuipment will help you advance faster. I've already been through it. I worked my way from apprentice to journeyman. It's how I put Top Ramen on the table, and parts on the Supra.:icon_wink
