I picked up my trim pieces from the dealership and noticed they were different then the oem ones on my car. Instead of a nice smooth surface they are grooved/ribbed. They look awesome with this slightly better design but dont help me much as they are going to look too noticable on the car. I was wondering if maybe these came on a different year then an 87 or on a jdm or euro models or if Toyota just redesigned the trim afterwards expecting owners not to care or to replace all their trim pieces to match.
Heres a few pics I tried to take to show the grooves, oh yea the part #s are the same as well.

what the. I've never seen trim like that. looks interesting if you had a full set on a car but in your case it sucks that thats the only one you need...
Maybe tell the dealer its the wrong one?

A friend of mine ran into this same issue when she was trying to get some trim for her 87. It looks freakin sweet, but it definately doesn't match the original stuff...

They do have the metal inside, I never noticed this style trim on 86.5s so if someone else can also confirm that their 86.5 has this style that would solve this mystery. Then I just got to figure how to order the 87-88 style.

Almost looks like they forgot to put the clear stuff on them.

Indeed. Someone else ordered new moldings on here before that were different as well; among other things, "Toyota Supra" wasnt painted on protruding white letters.

If you'd like, I just picked up a driver side pre89 grey fender molding. I have a "burgundy/maroon" car, so it doesnt match, and if I'm going to change the molding, its going to be something new or different. Give me a sec to clean it up a bit and take a pic.

Edit: It looks better in person actually, though I couldnt get a good angle on it.

might be, I know 89+ Narrowbody trim is hard plastic as well..

My girl's 86.5 trim looks the same, so that's not questioned. I think JDM 87 trim is different from all other years, but I can't confirm that..
