A good seal can also leak if there is a groove worn into the shaft from the old seal. I had that problem on my differential side seal.

I will try the tracer first. Also, I will take the cps cover off and look for leaks. groove on the shaft sounds like a real problem.. hope thats not the case..

Ring blow-by is possible, because the engine got lots of miles.. Even before the oil leak started to be visible, car used to consume a quart in between oil changes..

You can leave the CPS cover on. Just run your hand under the cap and see if it gets covered in oil. You can also shove a digital cam under the CPS from below and get a picture pointing upwards at the cap.

If your blowby is excessive you should see a lot of oil in the accordion tube coming from the pcv hose.
