Howdy all,
I recently purchased a 1988 Supra Turbo with 112,000 miles. It has a few mechanical problems but is complete, fairly straight and runs ok. I got it for $500.00 with the idea of entering it in a redneck “Junker” road race at a local track and throwing it away at the end of the day.
I have never owned a Turbo Supra or any import for that matter. I have always been an “American Muscle Car Junkie”. So sacrificing a $500.00 Toyota for a few days of fender banging fun sounded great. Little did I expect what I was getting into.
My fist clue was the guy I bought it from. I told him what I was going to do with it and he looked at me like I was out of my mind. He says “Let me get this straight… you want to gut this car slap a roll bar in it and spend 12 hours on road track banging fenders with 25 other maniacs hell-bent and destroying it… then letting the junkyard have it !?!?!”
That about summed it up… sounds like fun… right???
So I get it home and the wife get’s a look at my Redneck Racecar and says… “No way are you going to destroy that car!!” Great …I seem to be batting .000 in the support department here. She says her nephew is going to be 16 in a year and he is going to need a first car.
So now after further review …I am now the proud owner of my first MKIII restoration project. I must say after doing quite a bit of online research I am getting more and more excited about the potential in this car and I am getting more and more confident this car is not going to a 16 year old for his first car.
Any suggestions on manuals I should be looking at and upgrades and modifications that are California emission legal would be greatly appreciated. I am in some real new territory here but I am willing to learn.
