Picked up a free trial to Eve Online over the holidays. It's a SciFi MMORP with some significant differences from conventional games like WoW. Been at it for over three weeks now and I must admit, I am thoroughly enjoying it.

Check out a movie here:

And here is a picture from the game - you're not likely to see one of these any time soon, this class of ship is incredibly rare, but it gives you an idea of the scale / graphics ingame. Yes, this is a real screenshot, this is what it looks like all the time. Wimpy computer owners need not apply. ;)

Never played it myself, but my brother played it a while back. He really liked it but stopped, because it was taking up too much time. :icon_bigg It looks cool, and I'm sure there is a lot of new things since last time he played. He said they did a good job of expanding and introducing new technologies as the game progressed.

Errr... not quite. You can get a two week trial - let me know if you want one, I can get you hooked up - and after that you pay $20 for your first month and $15 / month thereafter.

Essentially, the game is free, but then you need to pay for play.

I'm pretty sure that CCP, the company that made this, is from Iceland, actually.

Yea, how does it work?

Can you play unlimted or is there a certain number of turns or hours you can use per week?

If you play more and have more time, then you have an advantage? Also, can you be attacked when you are offline? That would suck.

That question is a BIG can of worms.

But here's a quick summary. A pilot is a human being in a 'pod', a small self contained capsule with life support, limited movement in space, and control hookups for ships.

You can install your pod in a ship, anything from the smallest frigate classses all the way up to Titans, which are bigger that the picture posted above. When plugged into a ship, you get to use the ship's drives, weapons, etc.

Ships are built for different tasks - mining, courier, combat... whatever you want. Plus there are module spaces that you fill to customize it to your needs.

You need skills to fly ships / operate equipment / pick your nose in a pod, so you have to make money to buy books to learn skills. Skills take real time to learn - so if you need to learn to fly a battleship, and the skill says it will take 6 days to learn, start now, you'll be done in 6 days realtime. Luckily you can do other things in game while learning, and your current skill continues to train while you are offline.

Play is unlimited - well, you can only play 23 hours a day, they are down for one hour every night at 1100 hours GMT for maintenance. And it's not turn based, it's realtime.

There are some cases where you can be attacked if you are offline, but they are few and far between... if you were docked in a player owned station, for instance, and it was besieged and destroyed while you were offline, you would run into problems. Chances are you won't see player owned stations for months after you start playing, however.

I should mention that this game is BIG. If you started on one end of the galaxy and set a destination to the other end, then just turned on your autopilot... well, first off, you'd likely get killed by pirates before you made it there (not all of known space is friendly), but if you did manage to make the trip intact, it would take several days at the least.

Sounds really cool, but I don't know that I would want to pay 15/month for something that I could only play for a few hours a week.

I'd love to have the time though.
