D-42's necks ARE WEIRD. Then again, i play with much thinner acoustic necks by rule of electic guitar players :D

how is it weird ? just curious , being that its "ABOUT" a 4 K guitar, I'mm curious why you say its weird ?

You certainly cannot go wrong with a Martin (esp a BEAUTIFUL one like a D-42). I have owned a few Martin's over the years and have been happy with each one.

I would strongly urge you to look at a few Taylors before making your final decision. I really LOVE Taylor guitars. I don't know how much price is factoring into your decision (I know it did not in mine), but you tend to get a little more guitar for the money with a Taylor.

As far as "having your mind set on a D-42" - what does this mean? Do you mean you played it and loved it? Or that what you have read makes it appealing?

If you haven't played it yet, my suggestion would be to go to a place where you can try out a wide range of instruments. Get any preconceived brand or price range preferences out of your mind. Play a bunch of them! You might find it interesting what appeals to you if you take that approach.

I bought my first Taylor the day I went in to pick up a $3,800 Martin. I ended up falling in love with the Taylor 414 (~$1,400). I took them both home and I have since sold the Martin (along with two others). I still love the Taylor, and have not even thought about looking for anything else since.

At the same time, I'm not telling you to cheap out. I used the same process when I was in the market for an archtop. Unfortunately, the one I liked was roughly 2k over my budget. I went ahead and got it, and have been happy ever since.

i find the necks on the d-42's, or any martin, to be unbearable. The dimensions just seem off for how thick the neck is versus how wide it is. I don't know, maybe it's just me.

um, theres a few guitarcenters near me, an I have a Martin DCME that I relly like, I',ve played a few Taylors aswell, an there really nice also,

But for some reason, I'm just a Martin kinda guy, I have played the D-42 an not only do I really like the way the neck feels, I really like the sound it produces,
I found that guitars centers is overly marked up an I try not to buy from them specially seeing all the little kids ate bumping an smudging up all the guitars there, , I found a dealer other than guitar centers that sells custom les pauls for about 700 dollars less an thats where I'm heading now to put a down payment on one, so, I'm also going to inquire about what he charges for a martin D42

JAV ----- yea your right, that too.....:biglaugh:

I know what you mean about Martin > Taylor. I went all over town playing all kinds of 2000 and 1500 dollar Taylors, but the best guitar I picked up after about 4 months of playin around:

I think it was $800 when I got it new Just released.

Unbelievable sound, and no gay shiny trim or silver polish or anything. The Fishman EQ can make this thing sound great from ANY speaker and amp.... And I dunno what that guy is talking about neck feel or whatever... this one's a little bit thinner than most but still really strong.

Anyway that's my input... I know you're probably looking at something more expensive though... let us know what you end up with.
