Hi i'm new to supras, i signed up a little while ago but i just got my first supra for a birthday present(19 yo as of two days ago). its a 1988 automatic with a7m-ge engine, with 100,000 miles on it. its in ok condition i just have to replace a few things.

I currently drive a 92 Honda accord auto(non-vtec), 4 door 273k miles on it and a friend has been buggng me to race forever. i know its not a supra, but would be able to beat him, he has a Ford Probe, same year i think. automatic non-turbo?

(BTW im a noob at this sorta stuff. so any tips on what i should to to my supra first are accepted) Thanks.

Welcome! The first thing you should do is maintenance... as Boosthpy said...

some examples:
Check all your fluids
Change the oil and the oil filter
Check the air filter, and make sure it's ok
Check the brake pads
Check the tires
Check all the hoses in the engine bay for cracking
Replace anything that needs it :)

http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?p=67655#post67655 This is a thread with the links to the TSRM, the Toyota Repair Manual. It has a great section on maintenance.

I'm not sure about the Probe. You might be able to beat him, but be VERY careful. The Supra, being Rear Wheel Drive, handles MUCH differently than your Accord, or the Probe, and is very easy to lose control of, especially if you aren't familiar with the handling characteristics of a RWD car.

Again, welcome!

welcome to the board.

if your supra is stock 88 Auto, I wouldn't race anything out on the street. Who knows how old those truts and those brakes are. The key is not going fast, the key is being able to control the car if situation gets out of hand. A stock Supra suspension is just not cut out to do the work.

Becareful out there.

If he's 'whining' alot about racing you, he has a "little weener" complex. You need to do a compression check on all the cylinders. New spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Run some "Techron" fuel system cleaner thru. (Get it at Wallymart for $6)
Tires !!!!
Fix ALL the oil leaks you can. New coolant, flush system, new radiator cap. Hoses???

Loose wires and vacuum lines??? Any rubbing on stuff???

Then practice up a bit with the driving and drifting. Then go kick his butt !!!

Hello,

Keep in mind you have a Supra you have nothing to prove the car has already done it with its own heritage. If your buddy stays on you just remind him of the fact he is driving a probe which is really no better than any other Domestic Escort, Cavalier or head gasket using Neon. Remind him of the 280,000 Honda you had and tell him to worry less about racing you and worry more about buying a real car. Mabey sell him your old Honda so he will have something reliable to drive. Anyway congtats on the mk3 they are a little tempramental but are a great car.

That's all fine...but....check out all the things I mentioned in my prior reply before you do...cause you don't want to be laughed out of the race because a hose blew, or it starts cutting out because a sparkplug wire breaks down (under heavy load).
 your car, and treat it right. And watch that ego.

Thanks for all the tips guys. i got a friend of mine to look at the supra, he says that the oil pump on the tranny is busted(i think he said thats where it was) i need new tires and brakes and the interior looks like a family of cats lived in it heh. the car has only been sitting since 99 i dunno if thats good for how old it is or bad lol.

im not planning on keeping the 7m engine, i was thinking of selling my soul to walmart and saving my money for a 1jz swap. i want to do the tranny aswell but i hear that changing auto to manual can be up into the 10k range.

g/j for getting it looked at before romping on it. good luck w/ the soul thing. and about putting a 1jz in it, well that will cost much more than the tranny will.

the writeup on how to do it is in the faq section i beleive.

not too hard and not that expensive to do 5sp swap, been considering it myself. you MIGHT pay a $1000 for the parts if you really get ripped off. go to your junkyard, or find a cheep parts car thats wrecked and just pull everything from the flywheel to the driveshaft off, the clutch master cylinder (that just bolts onto the premade holes in the car), a shift boot, and the necessary tranny support arm. dont have to mess with computer asside from like two or three wires.

where is a good place to look for a 5spd, also would it be better to get a 6spd. obviously i could see the 6spd would be more expensive but i hear 5speed cant hold too much hp(aleast as much as the 6spd i mean).

i dont plan on goin to the drag strip with 1000+hp and tryin to kill people, i would like to be able to beat most anything around here. especially this 94(i think) Supra TT it has a 2jz and the guy is like the undefeated champ of streetracing around here(eats hondas and vetts for breakfast im telling you).

Sounds like you know what you want to do!!!! Be carefull about selling your soul to walmart. At about your age I tried that for a mk2 supra. I worked so hard to keep that car going that walmart put me in the managment program. Needless to say walmart showed me some money, and the mk2 supra went down the road for a new car. It took me 5 years of missing a supra to buy one back again. So to some up!!!! Supra's rule Walmart sucks!!! Good luck with everything.
