New Dash or Dash Mat?

Hey guys, just trying to get some peoples opinions here. The top of my dash has several cuts and cracks across the top, and I'm finally getting around to doing something about it. My question is, should I go ahead and pay to get another dash (~$150-$200 with shipping), or by a dash mat(~$30), like the ones I've seen on ebay? I haven't seen a decent picture of one of the mats actually in a car, but from what I can see, they look pretty ugly. If anyone has used them, please tell me what you think. My interior is shadow gray, so any pictures of mats on that color would be very helpful. Thanks.

I used to have one of those mats. They looked decent in the pics but in the car it's just plain ugly. It would sometimes slide off a bit which was annoying. It's honestly a waste of money IMO :3d_frown:

I'd get a new dashboard.

NO NO NO! Get another dash they're not that hard to come by, there just a lot to ship $$$

I shipped one to a member on here for 75.00, so if people charge like 200.00 kill them.

I fear the day my dash goes.. But it still soft to the touch so I have some time. Though there is a little wave near the defroster vents..

I pulled my dash and replaced it in the driveway. It wasnt to hard, but I did make sure that the job was complete in one sitting, otherwise I know I would have forgot where more than a few things went

+1. The only annoying thing is that I dont have anything holding it down on the parts closest to the seats, so it flaps up when its windy with the windows open. The back part of it is pressed between the windshield and defroster vent area, so its snug..

i ordered a dash mat from some guy on ebay. it doesn't looke too bad. i haven't put it on the car yet, but i had custom ordered it for it to be black with blue trim. it's like a navy blue. matches the interior pretty well. velcro can stop the sliding problem. i'm gonna put it on this weekend and take some pics. my dash looks like the grand canyon!

oh and the dash mat was like $25shipped

I've seen his and it actually looks pretty good. You should post some pics up Derek.

My 86.5 had one on it when I bought it and it was always slipping off and just plain looked like crap. The dash was discolored under it very bad but not cracked. So when I pulled the dash to swap wiring for my supermoniter, I bought some gray spray paint made for vinyl/plastic and painted it. It looked pretty damn good to.

:dunno: I've had one (a genuine one) on the car for over 20 years and I don't think it looks bad. Doesn't move around in the slightest and the dash underneath is as pristine as the day I bought the car. To me it's just another form of maintenance. Keeps the plasticizer vapors off the windshield too...
