Well I have been fighting stock 2jz coils and there some times lacking performance (in my case) so it was time for an upgrade. Over the winter me and a good friend Bill have changed my car over from running a problematic AEM to a ViPEC V88 with full custom motor sport harness. He worked in OZ as a large Rotary race shop building harnesses and learning from the pros there. I also wanted to ditch the 2jz coil/HKS DLI stuff.
I started looking at better higher out put coils with there igniters built in. I wanted to do this for two reasons. First was to lose all the stock ingniter, coils and HKS DLI mess. Second was to keep it looking stock from the out side.
Bill and i came to the conclusion that LS1 coils were the way to go. We were able to source some coils from a 5.3L LS truck engine. We picked the truck coils because there nice and compact and the highest output. Once we had done that it was time to mount them. We first started by trying to mount them under the intake manifold. We soon found that was not going to fit or look good. Bill came up with the great idea to mount them in the stock 2jz coil location. After some quick measurements and a bit of fab work we had them mounted under the stock cover.
I would like to thank Bill for his original idea and help with this part, it had turned out great!
I have also included some pictures of the harness 95% done. This harness was Bill's Baby and he make a great harness. We have room for expansion too when we start adding in oil temp/pressure, fuel pressure, EGT, Exhaust back pressure and so on.
The last thing on the list is the fuel system. I hope to have that all squared away in the next couple of weeks.
Measuring...
Fitted....
Under stock cover.
Harness...
Injectors and about all the harness you see in the engine bay.
Pictures of the fuel system to follow.
