I don't remember if this is the right spot for this to be here, but mods, feel free to move where necessary.

There's this MK3 Turbo i've been looking at for the past few days now and I'm wondering if it'll be worth the $3800 asking price.

Specs:
-'90 5-spd Turbo Targa. red with grey leather
-120,1XX miles on the clock
-it's a 2 owner car with the last 8 years being female driven
-They have all maintainance records up to the day the car was purchased back in 1990 along with the original window sticker. Everything has been done on time.
-It's bone stock down to the air box
-Brand new Yokohama AVS dB tires ~100miles on them
-clean title but if someone can run a carfax report for me, that would be great.
-head gasket, timing belt, clutch, and distributer cap were replaced sometime last year with factory parts. (they weren't aware of aftermarket parts existing)
-A/C works and blows cold and they have the original targa wrench
-interior shows the usual wear and tear of a 16 year old car.
-no smoking out of the exhaust of any color

Only problems that I saw/was told about with the car were:
-CEL is on due to a knock sensor
-Oil pressure gauge reads 0 when at idle but starts to go up as the car starts to move.
-possible vaccuum leak somewhere or just a loose hose
-hatch needs a bit of a slight touch to get closed
-infamous suprastick is needed to keep the hood open.

What I wanna know is that with it bone stock (and it will remain that way for about a year or so till I can save up some extra cash) is will it be reliable enough that it doesn't spend more than a total of a month of down time within the year while keeping up with regular maintainance routine and will I be getting about an average of 19mpg of city driving while staying out of boost? I'm gonna have my mechanic thoroughly inspect the car on Monday even though he insists that the Supra is a terrible car to get with its billions of problems.

Thanks SM
-Alex

I got my Bone Stock Supra 4 months ago, for 1,500 dollars and had to spend 2,000 for it to pass inspection... It needed a new mani gasket...tires....brakes.. and alot of random stuff... and so far there has been nothing wrong with it for the 4 months...But it all depends how the car was treated by its past owners and how much it was beated on...

it sounds great, but the only thing that concerins me is the oil presure at idle you stated. and the knock sensor can be a pain, if you test drive it, just know it will be in "limp" mode with that code 52. it wont be at its full potinial.

what can I do about the oil pressure? what is it supposed to be reading at idle? should i also get a compression test done on all 6 cylinders? is there anything typical that i should be expecting to replace soon aside from what is listed above?

I'd buy it, if it wasn't for that oil pressure thing. That can either be a big problem, or create a big problem later on.

What about the body, what shape is it in?

BTW, suprastick, best word ever. (Of course it's like $30 for new gas struts)

i believe at idle only 4 psi is nedded, could be wrong.
but maybe get it checked with a aftermarket gauge, but that'd be alot of work. and at 3000 rpm's you should be around 40psi. hopefully.
and a compression check is always a good idea.

replace gear oil(tranny and rear end)
inspect all hoses, they get real hard and crack and youll eighter blow one or it will start leaking and you might not know it.

3800 seems a weeeeee bit steep IMO

for the current problems? i suppose it is. I'll see If i can get them to drop the price though due to the oil pressure thing.

the body is straight. could use a bit of a paint job, but it's not that bad. the hatch needs a special touch to close.

I'm just really concerned as what to do about that oil pressure problem though. grr. Anyone really know what the gauge is suppose to read at idle and certain RPMs? maybe it was at 4PSI, but the angle i saw it at said 0.

I'll find out more when the dude brings the car up today around 1.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I appreciate it.

as far as Oil pressure goes, its been stated many times on here that the 7M has a HVLP pump, and the reading at idle CAN seem scary low, but in fact may be within spec. Also the 7M does not like to run low on oil. If you are even a quart down it will affect the oil pressure. Make sure the one your looking at is topped off on oil.

I too agree that 3.8k seems a tad high on price, but it really depends on so many other factors that its almost impossible to put a definative price tag on.

I usually determine value this way. Determine what the car would sell for at the absolute max in showroom condition with no modifications. Then subtract the retail cost of any thing that would need to be done to get the car to that factory showroom condition. Finally, add fair market value for any modifications or upgrades.

For example: Start with, lets say, $5000 for the base value of a showroom condition Supra. subtract $1200 for factory quality paint job (or a percentage of that figure depending how far gone the paint is), $400 if it needs tires, $700 if it needs upholstery, $1000 for a rebuild if it needs one, $300 for a clutch, etc... (these figures are just my guesses, not actual cost to you and may not need any of that...its just to illustrate my point). Then add some value for aftermarket head unit, speakers, intercooler. etc..and you should end up with a reasonable fair market price for the car.

...or you could just lowball him and offer 2k and save the rest to build the snot out of it! :naughty:

hahaha. good plan there weezl. i should try that. thanks for the info. the interior is a bit torn up both passenger and driver along with the rear seat where the sun hits it. maybe can deduct some of that...I don't really wanna go crazy with the car just yet though. keep it at stock reliability level (minus needing to possibly retorque the head bolts) for a while till I can get a decent daily driver. hatch cover is a bit dry and cracked along the edges too along with the e-brake boot. heheh.

well, turns out the guy's gonna be in Austin for a while due to family emergency. So, that means I won't be able to check it out till about Friday. Wednesday at the earliest. I really hope it's all good though. I was hoping to get it today if everything went well so that it would give me a week to practice honing down my 5-spd driving skills in time for my car club's 2 year anniversary on Saturday. Oh well. Time to sit and wait.

Try to visualize one of those cheesy "new invention" commercials with low paid overactors making themselves look completely clueless.......

Wide shot of greasy looking Supra Owner opening his hood, and looking under to see if his car has a BHG, only to have the hood fall back and smack in on the head.
cut to: Close up of Unsuspecting Supra Owner as he grabs his head in pain.

Narrator using exagerated infommercial voice:
"How many times has THIS happened to you!"
"OUCH!"
"Dont let your next blown head gasket leave YOU requiring medical attention..."
"Get the new SUPRASTICK™! "
"Yes thats right, you'll never need to buy expensive and untrustworthy hood struts AGAIN!"
"SupraStick™ NEVER wears out!"

Product close up, camera zooms in and out slightly as bright red "halo" glows around it showing just how amazing looking this product REALLY is!
"SupraStick™ is made of a new space age timber product material and has no moving parts that can leave you wondering where all your Nitrogen gas has gone."
Cut to: Supra Owner scratching his head in wonder...

"SupraStick™ is durable and can withstand months of being left in the back of your Supra during the 10 months of the year that it sits in your garage...or EVEN your YARD!"

"So do-away with those useless gas filled struts..."
Cut to: Supra Owner throws an old-fasioned hood strut into a trash can containing various parts including, but not limited to, a blown head gasket, broken seat belt clips, a cracked fog light, and a scratched up and twisted pre89 front lip.
"...and say Make Mine a SupraStick™ PLEASE!
Cut to: Supra Owner recieving UPS delivery of an "L" shaped box

"BUT WAIT! That's not all, SupraStick™ can also be used to hold up your rear hatch TOO!

Cut to: Supra Owner slamming his fingers in the rear hatch

"YES, thats right the AMAZING new SupraStick™ does it all!"
"Just look at the quality that makes the SupraStick™ different from all the imitators!"

Cut to: close ups of the detailed rounded end and the "machine cut style" of the threaded end.

"SupraStick™ is the only one that the internationally renowned website Supramania.com gives its group buy Stamp of Approval!"
Cut to: a smiling Jake, with a bandage on fingers and gauze wrapped around his head, holding up a SupraStick™ while giving the thumbs up!
Graphic overlay: flashing Reign_Maker Stamp of Approval logo.

"But thats not all! if you call within the next 15 minutes, we'll throw in this Intake hose repair kit!"
Cut to: product shot of a roll of duct tape and a hose clamp.
"So DON'T wait! Get your SupraStick™ NOW!

Narrator's voice gets real quiet and speeds up his already incredibly fast tempo to say: "SupraStick™ is a registered trademark of Fly-by-night Industries© and is not to be confused with WeezLWings™. Any resemblence to a broom handle is purly coincidental and should be used to sweep up your shop. The manufacturers of SupraStick™ do not imply any warranty and SupraStick™ should not be used to beat your dog, poke your girlfriend spouse or children, and is not intended for any other use."
