Need help picking a turbo

Hey I need some help from some turbo guru's. I was looking at getting the 60-1 kit, but then the other day I heard that a person in town was buying a 542whp corba mustang. I know that I won't be able to beat it, but if I ever do race it I don't want to left to far behind.

(trying to make it to the track this year, street racing really isn't smart, but I'm not saying that it doesn't happen)

So now I'm thinking about buying the T66 kit for a little bit more room to play. I was wondering if this is to big of a turbo and what kind of spool times I can expect. And any opinions from people that have these turbos. I'll list my mods.

1jz engine
Aeromotive -6 Fuel Pressure Regulator
Walbro GS341 Fuel Pump
TTC -8 AN top feed Fuel Rail kit
686 cc high impdance injectors
2jz waterpump with electric fans
stage 3 RPS clutch
11lb lightweight flywheel
3" electric exhaust cutout
Aluminum lightweight 1 piece driveshaft
Aluminum lightweight pulleys
HKS adjustable cam gears
Stinger standalone
AEM adjustable boost gauge

Also wondering what size intercooler piping I should run

Personally, I would run the 60-1, with a .68 A/R turbine section, and a 75-100 shot of nitrous.

That way, your turbo spools hard and fast (since you're a 1JZ, you'll be dead in the water until something spools) and the nitrous will super-cool your intake charge + deliver even more power.

Even with running an open downpipe and a standalone you think that it will spool that slow. Whats your opinion between running Nitrous or running a fuel cell with c16 or the new q16.

Do you have any guess on what kind of full boost spool RPM's I would hit with these two turbos

I sold a masterpower t70 with .68 a/r exhaust housing to a customer with a 1jz in a lexus and he said it spooled really fast

Get a GT4082and be amazed of the power and spool you will get. Big power FAST Spool!

I have basically the exact same mods as you, but now I have the 2jz bottom end. I have the gt35r and absolutely love it. I made 543rwp @ 24psi, but I daily drove it at 455rwhp @ 17psi. It's probably not enough on pump gas to beat that cobra, but it will hand a C5 vette it's ass, and I'm sure it'll beat a C6 rather easily.

I've been thinking about going to the gt40 myself, but I dont' really have a need for it. I just get bored easily and sometimes the thought crosses my mind for a change. I'd like to know more about the gt40 and how much more power it would give me. The spooling time doesn't bother me because all it will do is give them another second or two headstart. I'll eventually catch them.........:evil2:

The gt4088 spools fast and makes good power, people have made 540 rwhp at 20.5lbs of boost. Blackdevilsura did this years ago on a 7mgte

How much $$ do you have, because you should do a set of cams with the single. If I had enough cash to toss around, I would run a 71gts on drewgo's manifold, some 272 cams, a 44mm wastegate and a full 3.5" exhaust turbo back, but alas, I will be running a Holset HX35 internally wastegated (set at 12psi with an aftermarket wastegate actuator) on an XSpower manifold with an XSpower downpipe and stock IC.

2.5" intercooler piping, or you could run 2.5" hot 3" cold if you really wanted to.

If you don't believe me, compare the flow maps.

As for a GT40-88 spooling fast, mine didn't spool until like 4500rpm on my 1JZ. What a lag monster. It's awesome on the 1.5JZ though.

What's Your point? Now being that I was a pioneer of the GT Turbos with blackdevilsupra what makes you think this bit of information isn't known. If you want a fast spoolling turbo then the GT4082 will out spool the GT35/ GT4088. The most power will be generated by the GT4088. I had a gt4088 on a 7mgte spool at 3000rpms. Blackdevilsupra spooled at 2800rpms and went full boost by 4500rpms. I think the 4082 will be a fast spooling turbo for a 1jz. The GT35R will make more power than a GT4082, and should be ok for a 1jz. Personally it depends on what and where you want your power band to be. Having a power goal will help make this choice. I know someone with a to4z 1jz.

My point was that he said he indicated he wanted mid 500s to the wheels (by saying he wanted to keep up with a 546whp cobra), which would be outside the GT40-82 range. Yes, it's going to spool fast, but it's not going to be enough for what he wants unless he wants to make it with a shot of nitrous. The GT35 isn't that much worse than the 40-82 in regards to spool.

As for spool, I think we're talking different things here. By spool, I mean "making full boost". You're talking about making positive boost. My 40-88 on my 1JZ made positive boost around 3k, about 5psi by 4000, and hit 18psi by 4600rpm.

Point clarified. Again...you really cant have it both ways big power and QWIK;) spool unless you go mid turbo and nos. You get a GT4088r and that will spool faster than a gt4088 regular journal turbo.

I'm curious about how a GT40R would hold up against the GT40. I actually went with the non-R because I could get it in a .81 hotside, where as the GT40R, the smallest could get was a .86. I didn't think the ball bearings would make up for the larger exhaust housing, but I'm curious to see.

If we're going to get into a discussion about exhaust housings, I would like to see a T04Z with a .68 T4 hotside (you called it, someone was bound to mention the turbo). Flow wise, the T04Z is almost identical to a GT40-88, however it has a much larger peak efficiency island.

That thing has a 102mm compressr exducer. That really helps.

Most would call it "laggy" ;)

I :love: the way it makes it's power it's very linear compared to the explosive midrange of the GT3540r.

I gained 40rwhp for 4 psi boost this time.

Our dyno's read lower than US ones but as a comparison if I compare it to the 3540r it's pretty damn close even allowing for the Auto trans V's the 5 speed of the old configuration.

What is telling is I data logged a 0>100 Mph run at 18 psi and it did it in 9.8 seconds, this is THE fastest this car has ever accelerated, even with the 3540r at 30 Psi.

Yes, but what about the smaller exhaust limiting flow in the upper rpm range? Not a concern of yours?
