Aarons Stinger/Tach diagram calls for a 2.5k ohm, .25 or .50 watt resistor to make the stinger drive the tach. I've looked high and low, both on the Internet and locally, and haven't been able to find one. the only one I could find in 2.5k ohm is 25 watt.

Can I run a few that are in the correct wattage range in series to equal 2.5k ohms? The local radio shack guy said that it would work, but I don't trust his knowledge.

Thanks

For once the monkeys at The Shack are correct. I see no reason this needs to exactly equal 2.5K either. Try a 2.2K ohm 1/4 or 1/2 watt. Common as dirt....

Thanks Jet, I'll give the 2.2k a try, they have tons of them.

2.5k is a bastard size. 2.4k is standard for 5% tolerance (probably good enough for you). The 'k' means times 1000, as in 2500 ohms.

A list of the values easily found is here.

The numbers in the list (10, 11, 12, 13, etc.) are base numbers. Multiply them by powers of 10 to get other available values. That is, 2.7ohms or 270,000 ohms are also standard values.

If you want something closer to 2.5k, there's a 2.49k in 1% tolerance. Or, as you said, you could use 1.2k and 1.3k in series, but your tolerance goes up to 10%.

There's a $25 minimum, but Digikey is the best source for small quantities of electronic parts when the Shack fails you. It's usually easy to pad an order out with zip ties or good 3M shink tubing.
