problem - my clutch pedal does not return and stays all the way to the floor. i can move it almost freely with my hand.

i was in neutral slowing down for a red light, it turns green and when i pressed the clutch it goes all the way back and stays there. ive had no previous problems of anything like this and i didnt notice anything wrong with the clutch until that instant

anyone know what could be the problem or what i should look at? i tried searching and found nothing but i probably dont know what im looking for.

thanks

**update - if no one feels like reading it through
i took off the cover by the slave cylinder and the push rod of the slave cylinder disconnected. i found something with a notch where it looked like the push rod was supposed to go, which now hangs freely. a friend said my trans housing is messed up and possibly the clutch from it spinning?

what would be my best course of action now?

You need to bleed it, there is air in the line. You said it randomly did it to you though, so I would check for leaks. Start at the master cylinder (look under the dash where the pedal push rod goes through, make sure there is no fluid dripping down), then go to the master cylinder in the engine bay and follow the line all the way down to the slave cylinder, make sure there are no leaks and that the reservoir is full. Go from there (bleed).

this just happened when i installed everything in my car, was really confused why. the slave cylinder is on the bottom driver side of the tranny, slide under there you should see it pretty easy it has a line coming from the engine bay.

There should be a little bleeder valve on it (nut with a nipple type thing on it), may or may not have a little piece of rubber over it. Depends if you have a w58 or r154 on what it looks like but both should be similar.

There is a reservoir on the master cylinder, make sure it is full. Look for leaks along the line and master/slave cylinder. Fix leaks if you find them, then bleed.

no leaks but i found my problem... im probably using the wrong terminology. i took off the cover by the slave cylinder and the push rod of the slave cylinder disconnected. i found something with a notch where it looked like the push rod was supposed to go, which now hangs freely. a friend said my trans housing is messed up and possibly the clutch from it spinning?

what would be my best course of action now?

prob have to replace the clutch slave cylinder, or fix the one you have. 2 bolts to remove it and it slides out

Pics? Yes there are other things that can fail, sounds like the snap ring on the hub failed (usually do to incorrect assembly).

take off the plate on the transmission and youll be able to see if something isnt right, the slave cylinder should connect to the clutch fork and push it against the clutch. i had the issue where my slave cylinder missed the hole on my clutch fork and my pedal went to the floor with no pressure.

ill have a pic tomorrow i hope. i took off that plate already, on the other page i said the push rod is attached to nothing. if its supposed to be attached to the clutch fork should the clutch fork be somewhat stationary. what i saw was hanging down very loosely. the transmission hasnt had any work done since 2000 according to the original owner and ive had it since 2008
