believe me.. i would love to put a filter back on the car.. just no idea how to make it run right with the filter :(... any ideas?

Please explain the logic behind the filter causing fuel cut....fuel cut is caused by the turbo sucking too much air....

me or him?

Bad.... for both of you.

Here's the problem. The mesh screens are more porous (larger holes per particle) than air filters, so larger particles of dirt, crap, water, etc... gains access to your throttle body. Then the foreign material mixes in with the O2 and fuel and gets ignited inside your engine, causing it to ricochet all around your valves, cylinders, everywhere you can't see. Where you won't see a problem right away, it WILL kill the life of the engine in short order, maybe a year or two if you're lucky, or faster depending on where you live and how dirty your area is (gravel or dirt roads will kill that engine in VERY short order).

Running mesh on a car that is purely for racing isn't as bad becauce you aren't running it for hours at a time and driving it in less-than-desirable conditions. Stick with either factory filters or conical performance filters and you won't send your block to an early grave.

EDIT: Waitaminit... why am I telling you this? I would've thought you would know this stuff by now...

It would be the same material as a conical filter, I would just be trimming it to be put directly on the turbo. Never would I use something like window screen mesh, give me more credit Gaboon! lol I found my intake pipe though, so I can forgo that and just use the 4" intake pipe I have with a 4" opening filter. That should help airflow lol

BTW, sweet, thank you!

well everyone is right about the air filter i have a apexi power intake and no problems at all i had the same problem my speedo cable is broke and cant find a cable anywere besides a dealer and you know what they want for that. anyways check codes and see what the ecu is reading and i bet the tps is one problem so get it calibrated and fix your speedo cable and work your way down the list. one thing i may not be a expert on supras but autozone sells a really cheap book called the haynes repair manual. like i said i may not be a expert but i have always read books and they help alot

It's a dealer only part and I've purchased two short pieces for $21 each and a long section for $90....not that bad for a part that lasts 20+ years....bite the bullet!

Haynes manuals suck...we have the online tsrm at our fingertips so no need to get a horrid excuse of a manual.....also it's not hard to get a paperback Toyota service repair manual for our cars....hell I have 3 of them:)

A common failpoint on the speedo cable is an L-bracket that is attached to the side of the transmission box under the car. The short speedo cable will sometimes break its internals right at that piece, and you will need to replace that L-bracket as well as the short cable. The easiest way to test everything is to put the car high up on jackstands, crawl underneath, and once you locate the speedo cable, disconnect it from the longer cable FIRST. Spin the cable internals while someone is looking at your speedometer to make sure the needle moves. If it does, work your way back to the L-bracket. Be warned though, it is a ROYAL PITA to get at that cable without removing the block skid plate that protects the gearbox. You can snake your hand around back there and feel for the bracket piece, but getting a tool on the bracket to remove it is a bitch. It's a bonus if you have a lift to work off of, as you can see and get to the gearbox, cable, etc a lot easier with it overhead and you can get a light on under there.

no i cant explain it,, doesnt make since to me either.. it might not have been fuel cut, but the car was cuting out, it was very rich, felt like fuel cut at very low psi.. i even took it to the toyota deal cause i had no idea what was wrong. They said the car wasnt getting enought air. i took the filter off and the car ran perfect. i cant explain it, but it is what it is. I'll go get an air filter and put it on today and see how the car runs, how about that?

I can understand the car not able to pull enough air through the filter. I made the mistake of doing that on two of my previous cars. First, I put one of those really small intake cone filters on my cobalt and it ran like crap when I tried to get on it. I switched to a larger filter and that fixed it. I went back to the small one and it came back. That was the only part I put on there. Then I did the same thing down the road with the 89 Supra, since it was the only filter I could find locally, everyone was out of the larger Spectre filters. Same thing happened. Went away once I got a larger filter. And yes, I made sure to test with both filters and that being the only part/factor changed. Not the small valve cover filters (I would never use those), but Spectre makes a shorter style intake cone filter that is one of those universal ones from any auto parts store.
