i dont have a racecar by the way.

im not bitching about gas milage as much as im looking for possible alternatives at improving it and still meeting my goals.

im just going to keep working and keep upgrading/maintaining. i think in a month, ill tear down to the block and replace the HG and check things out.

Before you do anything, retorque the headgasket, while you're at it, replace the valve cover seals and hardware.

Replace at least any hoses that are damaged

^Like I said, maintenance first. And he already has the 3" turbo back, that was mentioned in his first post ;). And the reason I said I would preferably go with a Cometic is because it's realitvely cheap compared to a MHG and it will handle higher boost than a stock replacement gasket (which if he hits 300 HP, he's probably going to want to push even more boost).

If you are going to replace the headgasket, you will be able to take care of everything that could give you troubles. 7M's are not unreliable, 7M owners are unreliable, it happens over and over again. Replace all of your rubber on the engine. Buy a complete Head Kit and change all of the gaskets while you're in there. Do it right while it's apart and it should be the car you want for many, many years of reliable service. Rod Knock is a product of not keeping an eye on your oil levels more than anything. Once gain, unreliable 7M owners..............................

ok. thanks for the help guys. im going to change the oil this weekend and try to clean up the engine bay to find all of the leaks and what is burning. once that is done, ill start looking into gasket kits.

whats teh best way to clean oil/grime out of my engine bay besides pressure washing it?

if i go with a MHG, i believe it is a MUST to have the head and block machined smooth am i correct?

the guy that i baught the car from on here said it had an hks hg on it. i should have asked him more questions about which one it was and etc.

if i go COMETIC, i would leave the motor in and it would be alright. get some new ARP hardware, port and polish my head, check the condition of the pistons, and get it all put back to "stock."

i think ive got some direction now. thanks guys.

Correct on the MHG part. Incorrect on the Cometic part ;). You still will want to take the motor out and have it checked for straightness and machined to an RA of at least 50 on both block and head ;).

I pulled my motor, but didn't have the resources, time or money to get the block taken apart and machined.

I pulled the motor, got the head rebuilt and machined. I inspected the block for smoothness and used about 60+ razor bladez to get the block 100% smooth!

I would always recomend to have the black machined, but i did not.

the biggest problem i have with pulling the whole motor out to get it all machined is the fact that it is my daily driver at the moment. i have maybe but a weekend to have it out of service.

what if i just baught a used 7m and started from the ground up so i can get it machined correctly the 1st time. 7m's arent that expensive. ugh. this shit sucks

If you don't take out the engine an do the Cometic, you could possibly buy a lapping block and DIY while still in the car, but you are really taking a big gamble on knowing if the block is flat enough. It may run just fine for the entire time you have the car, some people have that kinda luck. Or you could screw your gasket up in short order too. That's the way of the beast, when the supra breaks down and it's your DD, you're typically looking at it being down for a little while so you can have the proper machine work done to it, or you'll be right back where you started ;).

{shakes head} i modified my car from stock over the last 3 years while working and going to class. ive done a few turbo swaps in the school parking lot, swapped rims, installed my exhaust.... the list goes on. coming up on graduation here in august i look back and realized that college may not be the best place to build up a car (only after getting my car finished did i realize this) do maintaince only while in college and small mods. worry about building a block up later and just dd the car. i get about 250 miles per a tank of gas with my mods and am happy i get that!

that said good luck man! just get your priorities straight, your in college to learn and better yourself, not work on the car. i learned that the hard way!

Good gas mileage and performance don't typically go in the same sentence. One can add a certain amount of horsepower by making an engine burn fuel more efficiently, but more often an engine produces more power by burning more fuel faster, as that fuel only has a certain amount of energy available in it.

If the car runs fine, just leave it as is until it's not your daily driver or you'll be spending alot of time walking because nothing ever goes according to plan, so be prepared to be car-less when problems start popping up.

Good luck though. Sorry if I'm pessimistic, but I'm in the same boat right now. My Supra is my only car and it runs flawlessly, so I don't dare start messing with it. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" as the old saying goes ;)

Just so I'm clear on this you're a poor student whining about the cost of fuel but you want to pour a ton of money into the car so it'll burn more?

Seriously.

I'm poor but I realize it's my choice to have a Supra and I could sell it anyday if I wanted to. If you say you are rich enough to do a 1JZ swap but gas costs too much, buy a used Honda.

Edit: But then again my Supra gets 23 City MPG as long as I keep my foot out of it. Highway probably wouldn't be any better since I have a 4.3 LSD
