Im picking up an 89 turbo supra at the end of this month but the car has rod knock... i've finally decided that this car will be my final project, no more toys after this, so she'll get all the attention and money. My ultimate power goal is 500-550rwhp out of an auto. I've doing alot of reading and trying to make decision in a very short amount of time but need some help:

1) will a jdm 7mgte hold up to this kind of power with proper tuning and modifications?

2) Should i rebuild the bottom end of this car and fully forge it with je pistons and eagel rods?
^(running a risk of a bad crank)

3)car has a rebuilt head with 0 miles, previous owner thought it had lifter tick. Get a block and crank and put a forged bottom end together, then just do a swap?

Im open to any suggestions besides a 1j or 2j swap, and the auto tranny will have a rebuild to handle the increased power before its brought up...in advance thanks for the help.

1) yes
2) yes
3) yes

If this is your final project, I would take the motor out and rebuilt it with the forged internals because 500hp will require it. New pistons, rods, bearings, and what not. Get a nice turbo upgrade and have fun with it.

crank just needs to be balanced pretty much. then you should be good. well after its properly machined and cut of course.

how robust is the JDM 7mgte, i'll be happy with about 450-500 at the wheels? how's the success rate of these engines with this horsepower without blowing?

the 7m block is pretty rigid. just improve on the oil pump and filtering and such and you should be fine. i'm just referring to the stock pressure based flow of the oil to the cooler,vs the up-to date replacement that uses oil TEMP.

are there aftermarket high flow oil pumps for the car?

I think im going with an imported 7mgte and just mod and tune for 450-500. i've done some searching around the net and can get one shipped for roughly 1200.

aside from eleminating the egr system you dont HAVE to have an imported engine for power..

do tell how you manage to put 500hp to the ground on an a340e when you figure it out though.

In my first post i said the tranny issue is already addressed. i know there are numerous companies out there that sell upgrade kits.

I finally have decided the route im going to take this car, as it will be my last it will ge all the love. This summer i will be forging the bottom end and placing some stronger valves in the head for added strength. I wont be going big turbo until next summer when i can repaint the car and get some nice rims, so this summer the motor will get the love.

Current plans:

nippon racing pistons - not forged but good for 600+
nippon racing valves
cometic mls headgasket
eagle h-beam rods
clevite bearings
fresh cut crank and machine and decked block
FMIC & piping - im still confused on size
fuel pressure regulator
walbro 255 inline and intank pumps
Greddy emanage blue + e-01 combo
Injectors - i'll figure out size when i figure what turbo i want to use
IPT a340e tranny build kit

my goals have exceeded, looking now for 600-650 at the wheel, if it just happens to come out more, imma cut that shit back. so what do you think, nice way to spend the first 5g's?

Thoughts welcome...

i did mean to ask...Why do folks go over to the 1J swap instead of keeping the 7M and building it. I mean it makes sense to keep the 7m because of displacement, again im new to the supra's. Is the 1J almost indistructable like the stock 2J?

if i had alot of money i would go for a 2jz swap, stock internals are good for 600 pretty easy, ive heard of ppl running 800 hp without problems. Only thingis you can only get jdm engines pretty much, they make 280 hp stock were usdm makes 320. Jdm does have map sensor tho i believe.....

personally i dont think ill build up my 7m past 300 hp, if you go past that you need a mhg and if i take the engine out, im putting something mean in. REAL MEAN. 7m isnt as reliable with oiling system, thats why you dont see too many drifters using it.

not entirely sure on this data, please correct me if i am wrong.

This does make complete sense though. again im learning about the supra's, and i only know about the 2JZ motor. I've been doing research on the 1JZ and found it to be as rediculous as the 2J minus .5L of displacement.

Question, is the 1JZ a pain in the ass to wire up and is a direct bolt in contrary to the 7M?

I've called a couple local shops and if i go 1JZ im lookin at about 5'g for a full swap....holy crap:1zhelp:

Do i NEED to get a full front clip or just a swap with complete wiring harness, ECU and fusebox?

I've found a shit load of literature on the internet with the swap but have found anything str8 foward saying " HERE IS EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO SWAP AND GET YOUR CAR RUNNING".

1j came in like 91 and 92 or something like that, but i think the special crossmember came in 89 and up. not sure. if not u can buy a crossmember or just buy a whole damn front clip which would be the easiest. i think mechanically its an easy swap, electrically if u get a full harness and ecu i dont think it would be very difficult. theres a shop in tampa, fl that'll do full swap with auto to manual for $6600. called XAT racing (xatracing.com) they can do alot there if u live nearby you should call them.
