Okay. I've done enough searches on several boards and I can't seem to get any lockdown on this dilema. I am running a 7M-GTE factory '88 Supra, and I've heard from everywhere the dangers of BHG. Usually it's only a matter of inevitability that I'll have mine go, most likely sooner than later, so I've decided to start with that first and foremost. It's obvious from the builds and rebuilds that people are using metal headgaskets to replace their factory stuff, and using replacement bolts/studs to keep proper pressure on the manifold once replaced. I know I need a metal one, but it's the thickness I'm stumbling over. I've heard everything from keeping the factory width to as much as I want to spend, but I know the higher in thickness I go, the more I'd need to alter the block or cylinder heads to incorporate the compression changes (i.e. shaving the block down, adjusting the heads in accordance with the height, etc...). I'm looking to keep this car as a daily driver with some additional pickup as I soup up the turbo, intercooler, and exhaust later on down the line, so I'm thinking the most I should probably go is 1.2mm, the least hassle and probably no additional mods to the block/heads. Can anyone shed some light on this? :1zhelp:

call me bro and ill explain. Sethron71 is a local richmonder and he knows a ton also. Infact he has just become recognized as a vendor on here for custom intake and exhaust manifolds. Be nice to your supra and itll be nice back. Watch your fluids and follow proper procedures for operating the engine. Example. Don't boost the car hard until its at operating temp meaning that the thermostat is open and coolant is circulating between the engine and the radiator. Don't boost for extended periods of time b/c it makes things get hot quick. If you drive it like you stole it your gonna find the weekest links quickly. Its an antique now so be careful. Sudden rises in engine temp are what cause BHG....

Stock HG is 1.37mm compressed so how do you come up with 1.2mm?

i thought the 1.2mm mhg kept stock compression ratio because it has an 86mm bore instead of 83mm?

Agreed. I say do a compression check. If it's all good I wouldn't touch it. Maybe retorque the bolts, but the old saying is true: "if it aint broke, don't fix it"

A 1.2 hks is 86mm bore size and will not affect your compression ratio very much at all. Not much to worry about on a near stock motor build. You would be fine with a 1.2 if not much material is removed from the block and head. You can call me at 330-541-1122 10am to 5pm weekdays if you need a straight answer on anything anytime.

Ok guys I need some advice. My '90 turbo is my daily driver for now. It started misfiring bad all of a sudden the other day. No white smoke, no coolant loss. I have fuel & spark. Compression test showed 24 psi in cylinder #2. Soooo I'm pretty much f*&)ed. Looks like the head has to be rebuilt. I don't have a lot of money to spend, and I need the car fixed asap. As far as I know, the motor has never been opened up before. I'm thinking of going with a toyota hg kit, so i dont have to machine the block, and arp studs. Suggestions? Recommended Torquing specs?

MikesFixedRoof - sounds like either rings, valve's, or hg. a block test would rule out the rings and valve's. if your stock power a stock hg would be fine just make sure the block surface is straight and machine the head. torque the head to 75lbs with new bolts or arp head bolts to there rec that come with the bolts or arp studs with there torque rec that come with them.

At first I thought it was the HG. But I had to drive the car for about 25 miles to my shop. and like I said, there was no smoking, and I appeared to have no coolant loss. It's only got about 70k on it. The guy at the shop believes its a valve/valve spring issue. All i have is an apexi cai and nur spec cat back so i am more or less stock power. All the injectors checked out ok, so I don't think it went lean and fried the rings.

rich won't timing be drastically effected by the change in height. i think its roughly for every .020"/.5mm removed timing gets retarded 12 degrees on OHC motors.

is this something anyone even considers when choosing a hg? yeah the compression ration is only going to be changed by a tenth or two but i would be more worried about the timing. never ran a 1.2 that why i brought it up.
