Need a prank deterrent - Help from EE's needed

Any way of using a small camera in your car to tape who's doing it? Or possibly even a web cam so you could monitor it live from your computer?

To the high voltage, low current statement. BAD IDEA! You have varying resistance here as you don't know what part of the body would be making contact, fat content of the body, whether or not they're wearing jewelry, etc.

High voltage, low resistance = high current



If you ground the door and run a low voltage source (AA battery is 1.5V...get a battery holder at radioshack for like a dollar) to the pillars on either side of the targa you could get them, heh. In order for this way to work you would just have to put rubber or some kind of insulator ( anything that wouldn't flow current) along the door jam, on the door latch on the door jam and the pillars or else your source and your ground will become very...very intimate. They lean against the door and touch the pillars and *POW*, small jolt, but enough that their muscles aren't frozen and they can pull away. You could connect it all to a switch... like this...

if you plan on taking the targa right back off...just put it on and start screw the bolts in just a little bit, roll up the windows and lock the doors

Doing this invariably leads to forgetting to tighten it down one day when it rains a bit and having it fly off on the street.

My personal suggestion would be one of those 'talking' alarms - then get a recording that's LOUD, says something to the tune of "HELP! SOMEONE IS STEALING THIS CAR!! HELP!!!"

As was mentioned earlier, if you don't want to have a constant electrical shock (that as mentioned could get dangerous even if low current) just make a circuit to charge up a small capacitor. Or hell, just leave a charged capacitor sitting somewhere where they'll get it. One out of a disposable camera or something would work great, and not too dangerous.

Okay, I'll take your warnings - maybe nothing more than a capacitor. It's not worth much risk, I just thought it would be fun to put a harmless stop to things. Thanks to a couple of posts I'm starting to look into a cheap alarm system with a microwave sensor. I've been a little worried about parking in more public places with the targa off, anyway, and that would be a help there, too. Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

I dont even let me car out of sight without the targa on or windows open. Too many shady people these days. Yea it sucks to put it on and off all the time, but hey shouldnt have bought a targa if you didnt think this would happen.

Violence is rarely the correct answer however IJ's approach would probably be the one I'd have to use.

Now what are you getting all nasty for? So because a few people I work with like to think their funny and I don't want to be bothered with taking my targa off and putting it on a couple of times a day when it's nice out makes me a pussy and makes MKIII owners look bad? That's stupid.

And going through all of what shit? Installing a cheap alarm for additional security that wouldn't hurt anyway? Maybe somebody comes up with a clever way for a targa quick release and improves it for anybody who is willing to get off their asses and do something more than whine? Whoever heard of shorting a car's electrical system with a 1.5v battery, anyway? Nobody has stolen anything, btw. Parking lot at work is not available to the public and I work with 35 people who generally don't feel a need to lock doors. Just a couple of pranksters that are drawn to a car w/o a top on who could stand a little of their own medicine.
