Wait wait... you spent a year rebuilding your engine, and you DIDN'T replace every single hose you touched?

I thought that was SOP when rebuilding...

Further, if the hose just popped off, you should have immediately shut the car off (I'm assuming you did) - I have *never* in my life seen piston rings 'fry' (and just who the hell calls it 'frying the rings' - I've broken rings, swollen rings, improperly set the rings, hammered the rings, introduced enough cylinder pressure to accelerate the wear on the rings, but never 'fried' the rings) - odds are, if all the coolant suddenly evacuated, your warped the head/blew the gasket to hell.

Pull the head, and check, before making a decision.

Just my .02 :)

over here we use "fried/frying the rings" all the time. i think we should give this guy a break...... he just burned up his motor (or warped the head, or hammered, swelled, or broke his rings). i can't really think of too many more sayings, and i hope you're ok with me useing "burned up the motor." is that ok, or is that a not ok saying also?

i agree....... how foolish, and then blame the carb for ignorance sake, and not watching your gauges.

actually i came to find out that i had another major problem- poor machine work. cylinders were oval, way off, and severely tapered. they did not use a deck plate which i specifically asked. when the car overheated (and i did immediately turn it off) the already wounded engine just had enough. my guess is, the rings were already struggling with how poor the cylinder bore was and the sudden increase in cylinder temp caused detenation- literaly blew parts of the rings out (u should see them!!!) even if the heater hose didn't blow- i garuntee the engine wouldn't have lasted with a real turbo on it. its a real shame that a years worth of hard work and saccrifice turned out like this. well...guess i should do 40 over with new pistons and pauter rods and have a more reputable machine shop do the work. then common sense tells me to chalk it up to a loss and part it out. i haven't decided yet.
