so as we all know the economy is in the trash right now. and jobs for me are becoming harder and harder to find. and the college funds arent their. so i was thinking aobut joinging the navy. but im not good with the whole boat scene. so a buddy whos in the navy said sign up to be in a mechanical program that the navy offers or some sort of desk style job or something where im not on a ship every day. and dont deal with water as much. I have been looking at the pros and cons

pros:
great benefits
money
better chance of gaining a job upon return

cons:
being gone for 2+ years
chance of having to be put in war zones

im jsut looking for everyones opinions right now. so if anyone wants to chime in that would be great

Okay, Im gonna give you some of my opinions/suggestions. Ive been in the Marine Corps now for almost 5 years, and this is how I would rate the PROs and CONs:

PROs-
Great Benefits(agreed)
Job Security(which means a lot during the tough economy times)
Fast Promotion Oppurtunities
Decent Pay
Oppurtunities to be challenged(speaking in terms of the Marine Corps here)

CONs-
Time away from family(its a sacrifice we make)
Sucks coming up in the ranks
Risky business

Thats what I can really think of right now. I can tell you that if you are weary about being in a war zone or being away from loved ones then I wouldnt join the military at all. Im not trying to sway your decisions, its just that you have to be willing to go to the fight if you plan on joining the military, especially during a time of war.

Hope that helps,
Brandon

thanks im just looking for opinions from everyone right now. i had to drop school to help make ends meet money wise. so theres not many jobs out there for a 17 yrs old with no education. i will probably have to settle for my ged and try to find some college to get into. but again money is a problem. im barely making the payments on the bills right now while my basically parted out supra sits untill i get get the motor and some work done. i mean im woking part time at$7/hr so not much happens. i bascially penny pinching to the max right now choosing when to eat and when not too based on money. and work isnt steady its like 4 hours a day for like 6 days than off for 6 or i could work 9 days in a row and bee off for 11. so this navy thing has got my mind in a bundle wondering if its worth it.

Seeing as you don't even have a G.E.D. let alone twelve college credits for enlistment, (the military is considering making this an enlistment condition for all services) I would say forget about the military and focus on the 25m target. Which would be some kind of piece of paper that says you have an education.

Honestly, the active Army or National Guard is going to be your only option at this stage. The Army has a G.E.D. program and if they help you get it, you will owe them your john hancock. Actually, I think your promise to serve comes first. Marines sometimes want college credits, and the AF or Navy.. forget it with a GED.

Wanna be on a boat full of seamen?

OK, jokes aside, Navy is the second most cushy of 4 main military branches (Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force in that order of toughness). That's from what my military friends say, and I know people from each branch. Honestly the only reason that I won't ever join is because it's not a job, it's a commitment and once you sign your life away you're stuck, no quitting. If you're truely considering it, talk to a recruiter (prefurable not the pushy ones that were used car saleman in a past lives), take the test, and see what you might be able to do.

Someone gave you wrong info....the Marine Corps requires no college at all,(trust me) yet without a diploma it would be very difficult.

Agreed, if you want to talk to someone you can PM me and I can give you everything I know from my 5 years in so far....but Im not too knowledgable on the Navy, but if youre interested in the Marine Corps, which if youre looking for a challenge you would be, I can help you out.

Just shoot a PM and I can give you a call if youre interested.

I resent that..I used to sell cars....

anyhow,
Navy and Airforce are going to be a bitch to get into right now and they're going to be picky on who they let in..They can, because they have tons of people wanting to join. People are choosing those 2 branches because they dont really want to go to Iraq..I think maybe its your best bet to go to your Human Services office in your area..They will set you up with a program to get your GED so you dont have to pay for it...Heck, even Jobcorps will help you get your GED and technical training...you work, get paid, and get all your living expenses paid...You'll learn a trade that you can use in the real world after while you finish your degree, or it will make you more desirable for a cushy Navy or AF job...Hope that helps

Hate to burst the bubble on the AF, but there are A LOT of AF personnel on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan, including security forces for facility protection. the difference is you generally will not see AF guys going on patrol, with the exception of forward air controllers, rescue, and special ops. I've been in the AF for almost 27 years (15 AD, 12 USAFR)..."cushy" is not the term I would use ;)

The AF is a lot more picky (you must have a high school diploma or GED and pass the enlistment tests) due to the technical nature of the service...we need folks that are a bit smarter than most. The Navy is the same way for the most part.

I understand some go to Iraq, but I was talking in generalization..Its not like in the Army or Marines where you basically enlist to go to Iraq..

Join the Army's or Marine's Infantry of stay home :sarcasm:. Seriously though, see if you can get your GED quickly before committing to which ever service you can, it will open up a lot more doors for you.

I love being in the Army, I wouldn't want to do anything else regardless of the pay. I have a ton of fun just about every day, and I get paid for it too.

I am current in the DEP (delay entry program) for the Airforce (leaving May 19th). I have cousins who are currently in the AF, and it doesn't seem so bad. My cousin is stationed in BEALE AFB. CA. and all he does is networking 4 days a week...Start off 8 weeks at BMT, and depending on your job selection depends on how long you stay at tech school. From what my cousins told me, going into the AF was the best decision they made, it is alot of fun they say...
