Try a strip of coarse sandpaper Jon. It's what I use on the rare occasion a better grip is needed. They usually come off by hand though and that's with leaving them on for two OCIs. Then again I never tighten them anywhere near 3/4 turn.

Btw those plastic cap wrenches are what, $2? ;)

im with poodles. i dont know why everyone has such a hard time changing the filter on the GTE. i have done it many times with no problems. when i first got my car and started reading threads about how "hard" it was i started getting worried but then i did and and i was like "oh, that was easy." if your having trouble changing you oil/filter and the reason isnt because you went NA-T...sell your car :p

also, if you install with a wrench it will just be that much harder to get off. however, if by chance a shop put it on too tight or it magically tightens itself up over time and you cant get it off and you dont have a wrench then a screwdriver works pretty well.. ;)

forearm workout.

seriously, I've installed the filter on my DD by hand for the last 3 years and have yet to have a leak.

Ditto...and you think you can't get to yours? ROFL....hahahahaha....wait not done.....bwaahhahaha, ok, just thought it was funny. Try doing it on the stock location on a 2jzgte....in the MKIII. LOL
THAT SUCKS!

I have to do that blind.

(not making fun of you, just laughing at myself for not installing a oil filter relocation kit, LOL)

TBH I never had any issues taking mine off on the 7m, it was quite easy. Now I have used those wrenches that supra90turbo posted on other peoples cars, and they work quite well on shit filters with no grip or that have been tightened way to much.

And the answer is..... a 74mm 15 flute cap wrench. Rite Fit A258. check out http://www.ctatools.com/catalogs/ritefit_appguide.pdf for other filters. Pep Boys had the wrench.

That explains why some people say its easy to change and others struggle. After reading that comment I went out and took a look and indeed without those lines the oil filter change would be a whole lot easier.
