MKIII Diff Offerings

'86.5 - '90 GA70s w/the 1G-GE have a 4.56, clutch-pack or Torsen LSD 7.5" differential, NOT compatible with any of the other A70 diff setups.

All 1G-GTE equipped GA70s have a 4.56, clutch-pack or Torsen LSD differential.

'86.5-'92 MA70 N/A MKIIIs without Sport Package have a 4.30, open differential.

'86.5-'92 MA70 N/A MKIIIs with Sport Package (TEMS & headlight washers on '86.5 - '88 : TEMS & PPS on '89-'92) have a 4.30, clutch-pack LSD differential.

Depends on the setup of the car, but you could actually go slower because:
- Lower gearing doesn't load up the motor meaning less boost
- More shifting and losing time
- All your gear advantage lost in tire smoke...

You may want to go to the Classifieds section, read the rules, and then post the differential for sale over there before you get a really bad spanking.....

Is it possible that the 89's came with the 3.9 gear ratio in the turbos? I seem to recall reading the axle code for diff as 3.9's from the door plate. I have an early 89 with square motor mounts and wiring. Also, to the OP I loved the acceleration that I had in my 88 NA with 1j swap (Stock turbos, cams and boost with only intake and exhaust mods). The 89 feels a little slower when I moved the engine over but I plan to go single soon so I think I will probably stay with the stock gearing.

Just so it's clear, the LSD has nothing to do with the gearing, what matters is the Ring and Pinion.

The LSD is the same for both models, the R&P is geared differently.

ok so it would be a bad idea to put a 430 lsd in a 7mgte? thats what im getting.

I put the 4.3 in my car, and no complaints. Top end is sacrificed, but really how often do you go past 140 MPH? Off the line she is quicker / responsive than my turbo diff. Highway driving requires more rpm = more gas consumption, city driving is great.

I am NA-T with the NA diff, I love it.. I am also drag racing so I think the faster acceleration is better.. I am automatic too so don't have to worry about shifting

And you might not get more top end if your engine can not pull to redline against a high load of wind speed at 130 mph. Said another way, installing a 3.73 in a 7MGE that came with a 4.30 doesn't mean you will all of a sudden do 145. In fact, you will probably go slower.

Ive been using a na 4.3 with my 1J set up and love it. Dont worry about going slower for the reasons posted, these gears will wake your car up and make it feel 10x faster than it is. It will still build boost, maybe like a couple hundred rpm difference. More shifting slows you down? Ummm.... how does grabbing gears slow you down? My car is a fucking nightmare in 3rd and 4th, nothing but balls to the wall hard acceleration. And with my 4.30 gears, Im going to get to third quicker that someone with a 3.73. I only really have traction issues when when I try to have traction issues, if I want to hook up and go, no problem.
