he could pick up a W58 a lot easier and cheaper than the R154 though...

and the new = tight thing would only make sense if its brand new and your breaking it in still. your problem may be that you need some new shifter bushings and a nice grease on them to provide a nice smooth surface.

But why would he want to go through all the trouble to convert just to get the weaker tranny. IMO the job should be right the first time. Turbo engine, turbo tranny. Why even fuss with the W58 tranny if you're just gonna convert to Turbo. And the parts for the R154 conversion aren't even that expensive from Jeff at Champ.

My car was an NA/Auto as well, and I converted to Turbo with an R154. Aside from the cost of the transmission itself ($500 for a 40k mile one) which came with everything still inside it aside from the flywheel. I did the swap for $50 from Jeff at Champion Toyota for the disk and $100 for the pedals master cyl and shifter from my local junkyard.

My best friend had an MKIV with a JDM 2JZGTE and a W58. That tranny didnt last too long with stock HP and a 6 puck. The W58 can't handle much for very long, like I said before, why bother.

And as far as an the R154 goes, I've never driven an R154 that wasn't notchy. Freshly rebuilt ones, Low mileage ones, High mileage ones that are beat to hell. They all are notchy - notchy and strong.

What I would like to see is actual proof of why they are notchy or why they shouldn't be notchy.

^^ ROFL, well, that sure took a while. Nice to know I'm just under-noticed and not just flat out ignored these days. ;)
