whats up everyone.

You can do all the reading in the world but until you actually experience something you really dont know what to think. I have two supras an 87 with the W58 and an 88 that i just swaped an R154 from an A430E. I cant believe the difference in feel from the W58 to the R154. The W58, like i hear a lot of people say, is like butter. Very seemless and such an eazy driving transmission. Something you can have fun in but also great for just cruising around. Now the R154, I have to say I always know its there. I can definately feel the difference in the interenals and the syncros seem to be a little harder, not as smooth between gears as the W58. No question the R154 was made for more power and harder driving. Like I said its really one of those things you have to do to understand. Just my two cents on the whole thing. I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks on the difference between the two or which one you like more.

Thanks Chris

Well I have to preface this by saying that my R-154 was used and it howls in 4th and moans in 5th, but I indeed have noticed the R-154 is much notchier, and less forgiving if you're not rev-matching as much. The W58 was a much smoother transmission for shifting etc.

ok maybe this isnt a fair test but I just picked up another supra and its 89+ r154 targa and mostly stock, my other is and 88 turbo with w58 and 3.73 rear end and bpu plus a little extra, no light weight stuff tho. It just seems to me that the 154 is so much more slugguser {not a word} when taking off, not like launching but like just moving up to the next window at the drive through. And as said the w58 shifts sooo well and just bang next gear, bang next then tap tap down shift and its in. the r154 is a highway trans or for guys that dont shift alot or need to do gear matching.

I post this all the time to show why the R154 is so much stronger...

yes, the r154 is stronger but to me I dont think it would be worth swapping into my car for what I use it for. I am under 400 to the crank right now but not too far away with the w58 and all is well, It shifts well and I am not light on this trans I launch hard and drift it a lot also dd the car too.
