I have a "ge" with about 90K mi.

When the car hits 2-3K RPM it makes a strange noise, kinda like a fast rapid pinging. It stops after about 3K. I thought it had to do with my oil so i changed it to Castrol syntec 5w-50 along with some valve dr. It still does it... I also noticed that there is a little oil arround the PVC pipe (that metal T shaped pipe) on the back of the block.

What could this noise be?

does it only make the noise while driving or can you be in park and just rev it out to get the same noise?

every single time you are driving within those rpm it makes the noise? and also if you keep the rpm's at the point where it makes the noise will it go away eventually?

I am just taking a guess at this, but when you rev your engine listen for where the engine is coming from. If it is near the front, then when you rev it and get that noise check the distributor for vibrations. I don't know, but you might have the same problem I am working with. When it idles it'll be okay but when I rev it the distributor makes a vibration that I can feel and the knocking noise is around there.

I am just guessing on this and I wish that it helps out.

We seriously need to create a user BHG and RodKnock and have them post in the thread when its been determined what the person has.

And what type of gas are you putting in there? Since you are in Phoenix and it is summer time, if you are using anything less than the ninety-one octane that might be just it.

That is what im affraid of... I have read the rod knock thread and it sounds like my problem... That is a big hastle i am trying to avoid, if i have to open the engine it will cost a lot! I dont know if i want to spend anymore money on my 7mge if it is rod knock i might as well do the 7mgte swap.... Right?:icon_conf

minimum (not recommended) you can do on a bottom end is replace the all the bearings. Given if the RK isnt that bad yet and hasnt scored the crank or rods.

If everythings still within spec just put new bearings in. a weekends worth of work. and ilike $200-$300

I had the same problem running 87. When I switched to 91 and a heavier oil it went away.

I took the engine apart later on and didnt see anything wrong with any of the lower end bearings.

It was mentioned today at the portland meet that alot of people mistake harmonic dampener noise for rod knock. I believe there is a thread here somewhere about it, but as I understand it, sometimes while doing timing belt replacements the harmonic balancer does not get torqued back on properly because its some insane torque spec. Over time the key begins to widen out the keyway on the front of the crank.

The good news is if thats your problem you can save an expensive rebuild...tha bad news is if its gotten so bad that its making alot of noise, its likely that the keyway on the crank is damaged and you could have to replace the crankshaft anways.

I have to admit I dont know how to check for this problem, but maybe someone else can shed some light

most likely a rod knock.

The fuel octane or small lack there of should not cause detonation when the engine is under no load. If detonation is going to accure, its only most likely going to accure when torque is at its highest and the engine is under heavy load.

Yes the ballancer issue is a small possibility, but all that I have see with this issue make noise at all different RPM ranges and the noise was clearly in the front of the motor and you could easily tell that it was external.

balancer noise isn't a pinging really, it sounds more like a tapping... like metal on metal, and not hollow... I had mine retorqued and the problem went away, at the time didnt know that it could take out my crank, but as soon as I heard the noise I looked for the culprit... torqued it down and no more noise... guess you could always try to retorque it and see if the noise goes away...
