At a very low level of understanding yes, pwned = owned. The word pwn originated from the game Counter Strike. Pwn is pronounced 'pown,' basically own with a p in front. Pwn stands for pistol owned, or someone just shot you with their pistol in a feat of amazingness. But to make it short, its just pwn.

here is a brief lesson from an avid CS player
pwned and pwnt origionated from a CS player making a spelling mistake. when in game, time is crucial so spellcheck is not an option. the guy accidentally hit p instead of o.
