OK, so I get to school today and I'm putting stuff in my locker, getting ready to go get scrubbed in when one of the other students comes in and is all kinds of depressed looking. Naturally, me being a super-sweetheart like I am, ask her whats wrong. Apparently she had some car troubles Sunday, starts telling me about it, starts tearing up, and goes off about how her parents say it's all her fault, and so on, and so forth.

I let it go for a while, mainly because I had surgery and she took off somewhere. So I pull her kinda off to the side and start asking her what exactly happened, hell maybe it's something I can fix for her so she'll go out with my buddy again, who knows. This is paraphrased, but it's about as detailed as I can remember: (her car is a 97 Saturn SL)
"Was gonna go out with some friends Sunday about 11pm... nothing was wrong, got about 10 mins out from the house and the car just died. No wierd sounds, no warning, nothing. Then when I went to start it, all it did was clicked. So I called home got dad up, blah blah.......... *goes off* ........... So we took it to the repair shop and they said the engine locked up because the oil froze."

Me- "What?... the oil froze?"
her-"That's what they said"
Me- "That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.... oil freezing...."
Her- "Anyway, they had this thing they hooked it up to, or put on it, and they unlocked it, which cost me $200"
Me- "They 'unlocked it'? How the hell did they 'unlock' it?"
Her- "I dunno, they just said they did. Now it'll run and drive good, but they said it only has a week left before it completely crapps out. So I need a good cheap car to drive.... know where I can get a Supra?"
Me- "You don't want a Supra, they aren't cheap, and they aren't reliable."

OK, made that last part up.

So I spend the next hour trying to convince her my Bro's 93 Accord would be perfect, 85k miles, $1500 would be perfect. 85k miles is too much, it'll be as unreliable as her car now.

Anyway, she heads to class and I tell her to call me when she got out. She calls I ask her if she wants me to swing by and check it out (wasn't at the hospital), she says her mom and dad think it would be a waste of time, but thx anyway. So I tell her to find out what they're gonna do w/ the car, and she checks for me. 'probably sell it for parts or just sell it'. So me being the business man I am ask how much... they don't know. They'll check and get back w/ me. so a few hours pass, and she says they're just gonna use it as a trade in toward a good car. I inform her that she wont get crapp for it at a dealer.... blah blah....

anyway, might be picking up a Saturn, if anyone is interested. lol

How do you freeze oil? That's my question.

Cliffs-
Chicks car breaks down, takes it to a repair shop, they tell her it locked up, they 'unlock' it, tell her the oil froze, I tell her they're retards, she cried.... lol

People like her and her parents are the ones mechanics lie to. It CLICKED? Could be a few things but what usually CLICKS like that when the cars dead is the starter...

Man, UNLOCKED IT? Id go fuck those mechanics up, Ive had people try that shit with me before, I said if they didnt cut the BS and fix the right thing, I was reporting their asses, and some of them woulda been DEPORTED.

How do you freeze oil? - I guess if you put it in the freezer it would get close?? but I dont think you can totally freeze oil...?????? And how does a hot engine freeze oil?

Sounds like the starter to me too. It is sad that this goes on. The worst part is that you TOLD her this is BS and she did not believe you??? Her parents are just as bad, her father thinks that oil can "freeze" How can that even be a good reason? This is a case where you hate the mechanic for doing this but you also have to be a little pissed at the girl and her parents for not listening when you told her its BS. I would print the replys here and show her, get her starter (or dead battery) fixed and let her keep the car!

I'm thinking it's the alternator. She was going out at night, so the lights drained the battery because the alternator wasn't working. Then it went clickkkkkk. I'd really try and buy this car Matt...............good luck.

And SupraHero... I'm tryin, trust me.

So to unlock it, they charged the battery?

I'm gonna try to go out and take a look at the car 2morrow, I'll see what's going on then. Take my code checker and alt/batt tester.

Let's pretend it was the starter rather than the Alt, like say the gear got stuck out (never had it happen to me) would it do the same thing or what? I would think it wouldn't slick though, would just turn off the dash lights and the like, correct?

I wanted to slap you when I read that :biglaugh:

You'd have to put liquid nitrogen on oil for it freeze, if that even worked, lol

Stupid assclown, money raping mechanics :icon_evil

To have the starter's gear come out and get stuck you would first need to be on the starter to have it extend (unless there is some weird problems) and if the starter drive gets stuck out while the engine is running it pretty much blows up (internally) the starter. You may discover a piece or two in the bellhousing (I did not). Had it happen at work with a mid 90's chev 350. It whines loud and than when the rpms go up it whines louder and just blows.

I personally would try and do the right thing here and tell her again nothing major is wrong with her car and she should keep it and change mechanics. If she still does not beleive you then buy the car and make money.

This is why if you have a daughter you teach her some basic car information. When i got my first car there were things my dad made sure I new. 1. I couldn't get my license until I could drive a his truck (manual transmission, Ford F-150) 2. I had to learn to change a tire. 3. I had to learn how to check and add if needed transmission fluid, oil, coolant, powersteering fluid, and brake fluid to my car. 4. I had to learn how to use jumper cables. To top it all off at 16 years old every time he worked on my car I had to be present.

I bet you one thing, they wouldn't have gotten any money out of me for "frozen oil". It is sad that they would take advantage of someone like that...:3d_frown:

Agreed.

and I'm going with Jay on this one, I think it's the alternator, one of the local supra owners around here recently had his go out and the exact thing happened, lights started dimming then car died.

I tried telling her that there was nothing wrong w/ the car if it wasn't making any wierd noises or anything like that. She asked my advice and I told her just to drive the stupid thing. Maybe not on long trips if she still doesn't feel comfortable, just cruise her neighborhood or something. Or, give me the stupid thing and I'll drive it for her for a few days, or a week. lol

I'm gonna tell her she needs to either call the place, get the exact 'diagnosis' she got, and call a dealer, or better yet, swing by and have them call a dealership and ask if that seems like a probable problem that she could have had. If the dealership laughs... she should be able to get some cash back I would think.

I have to agree with Ryan. The right thing is to have her fix an easy problem cheaply and keep what is probably a good enough car for somebody in school. Her parents obviously are not car savvy, and they're all getting taken by a jerk.

I know she didn't really listen to you the first time Matt, so trying one more time and suggesting she call a dealership is one thing to do. The other thing is to take it to another shop, tell her NOT to mention the crap they told her until they give her their opinion, and then they can all sit around and laugh about what the asshats at the first place told her. Last steps would be to ask for her money back and then go file complaints with the Atty General's office and Better Business Bureau.
