History. Son Bought car and previous owner had converted it from Auto to Std. ( not pretty, god how I hate how many hacks there are out there. More on that later) Son was bringing car to Dad (certified car nut) (Calgary to Peace River) to freshen motor, clean up previous owners sins and install up grades. Had some speedy lube shop place in Calgary change his oil for him. Made it 4hrs from home and rattling in engine ensues. Smart kid shuts it down and phones dad. Got it shipped to my house (500km) . Dad takes apart. # 3 rod bearing completely gone. Piston was slapping cylinder head, Crank FUBAR. Piston pin clip from # 3 backed out and pin scrapping cylinder. Inspect block and some cylinders had water corrosion. Found out this not original motor but came from a wrecker. Decide on JDM motor. Got one in Calgary complete with turbo, alt, starter, transmission etc for $1166 cdn. Brought home from Calgary . Dad reassembles old engine just for parts and to keep altogether. Learned valuable lesson about bolt and parts tracking when it comes to these engines.
Son leaves for India for 6 weeks with vague instruction to Dad to go nuts and order whatever I needed to build engine. Silly boy.
Tore down JDM motor and pleasantly surprised. Lots of carbon in cylinders but other that that in excellent shape. For the hell of it I plastigauged the mains and they checked out a .002 to .003. I was pretty happy about that. Did the same with the cams and got the same result. Nice!

Planned upgrades. TO4E turbo Greedy boost timer and controller, 3” down pipe, BOV, Intercooler upgrade, I will custom make intercooler piping right up to throttle body.(I will also powder coat it for him. I have my own stuff) RC 550 fuel injectors with FPR and Walbro fuel pump. Light weight flywheel and upgraded clutch. Relocate oil filter and upgrade cooler.(building my own fitting on my lathe/milling machine) Aluminum rad with flexalite fans. APR Head studs with MHG. Greedy timing belt. 180 Deg Thermostat.. May go with the lexus AFM later. But will upgrade the intake to a K&N.
My son had a bunch of body mods he wants to do and paint the car but that is his gig.

Where I am at.
JDM motor tore down and inspected. Nice shape
Waiting on Rings and Bearings. Got head studs, and gaskets. Moroso wires and greedy timing belt
Blocked decked .006 to clean up corrosion pitting (plan on milling pistons .004 to ensure not interferences issues) Hand honed head and block to smooth finish. Slight hone on cylinder just to clean up. (no cylinder ridge at all) Waiting on warm weather to bring outside to clean, clean and clean the cylinder block.
Tore down cylinder head and did a mild port job on intakes and exhaust concentrating on eliminating short side radius ridges. Blended the bowls a little and smoothed up the runners. Grind valves and seats then lap them.( I have Sioux cylinder head grinding equipment) (told you I was a certified car nut ).
Install cams, lifters and valves and check for clearance. Instead of buying shims I will trim the valve stem to proper clearance (due to loss of clearance caused by grinding valve and seats) Most is .007 least is .003 that I have to take off valves. I will then shim the springs to bring them back to factory installed height due to the loss caused by grinding. I may even shim them an extra .010 for a tad more tension.
And this is where I am at.
Doing lots of reseach and got lots of ideas from the info I got from you guys at supermania. Great site. First time I ever joined a forum.
Searching for turbo, intercooler, fly wheel and clutch.
For now I am off to Molokai. Will check in when I get back.
If there is intrest in my thread I will continue to update.

It's SUPRA mania, and this is in the wrong section.

Nice welcome Johnathan.................:nono:

I wish my dad had been willing to help me build my first supra, but he wasn't. You can get alot of help on parts from www.horsepowerfreaks.com . One of their employees is a member here. His name is Eric, and they have a section in the vendors section if you need to contact him. Good luck with the build, Jay

Sorry Suprafly, I'm in a pissy mood...welcome to SupraMania!
That's better.
:)

Welcome!
I skimmed over it, but read part of it :), really wish my dad was more into cars and willing to build one with me :( No time really, and no garage space.
Lets see some pictures!

WOW an actual BUILD im ready to read more cus it sounds like you know what your doing but your not sticking to the frequently used methods all of the other members use on here. Looking forward to seeing some innovations from you!

btw we need pics to fully appreciate your work.

I share the same feeling as most. My dad's not into cars as much as I'am. He was in the muscle car area. My uncles and cousins are mostly racers and mechanics though. My grandma use to drag race her 88 stingray. Anyway nice build and good luck with it all. Awesome dad,you better get son in there and get his hands dirty too.

You stumbled into the right community.

Looks really really interesting. Welcome to SM!

I'll 3rd the props to HorsepowerFreaks. I've bought a whole bunch of things for the Supie in the last month or two, from 3 or 4 vendors. HPF's service and speed on the orders was way beyond-I'll be ordering as much as I can from them from now on. Kudos to them, great job guys!

Please update! I'd love to see where this goes!

Will you be my daddy? My "Low Mileage" JDM Engine got rodknock first 300 feet down the road... :( Seriously, will you be my daddy? Oh, WELCOME to the forums!

That sucks and I know the pain. Been there done that when I was young. Nowdays won't put a motor in any of my rides with out freshening the motor just for that reason.

Sorry no adoptions in the cards. My son is a twin and they are both out of the house and I like it that way. BTW he does the dirty work (washing engine bays and underneath stuff)

Welcome to the forum! I'm in the opposite situation...my son has little interest in working on cars. :3d_frown:

If you haven't already, get a Toyota Repair & Service Manual (TRSM)...it's a must have when working on this car. Here's a site for the online version + a lot more:
http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/techtips.aspx

There's also a lot of info in the Reference Section on this site. The Supra has a lot of "quirks" that's makes working on it frustrating at times. I can see from your orginal post, you know how to ask a question...if you run into problems, post it with as much detail as possible and you'll get the help. ;)

Instead of milling the pistons, buy a thicker MLS headgasket. The stock one is 1.37mm, so add to that whatever you removed from the head and deck.

Also, by using the thicker headgasket to compensate, you keep the cam timing the same

What do you mean by that? LOL I wonder where my build falls in your ranking system. It just jumped out at me, sorry.:icon_bigg

Nice build Supaflyride. What a lucky kid you have. Are you building two, one for each twin? ;)
