Sooo... after a year of wanting to do this it is finally done!

The whole thing went pretty smooth actually, I was suprised!

-Pulled the gte from the wrecked car without a hitch
-Pulled the ge from my car without a hitch
-Swapped my w58 onto gte and installed new clutch - went just fine
-Dropped in the gte into my car.. went fairly smoothly, needed a leveler on the hoist tho... but we managed
-hooked everything up, plugged everything in, bolted everything on..
-Turn the key to start... Nothing!

Well it went almost smoothly...

First issue was the starter... I forgot about the neutral safety switch on the auto harness (my car was originally a 5spd and still is, but the wrecked one was an auto)... so I just jumpered it and bam motor turns over.. but.. wait a minute nothing!

So.. Now it turns over but not firing.. well imediately I go and check the codes.. hmm code 11.. looks like a problem with the ecu. So I go around and check all my grounds.. walla two of them by the tranny didn't get connected! doh!

Run my two remaining grounds and go to turn the key... Walla! engine turns and then fires! And runs amazingly well! Well it should, it's pretty much brand new (4,000km on the rebuild.. km's not miles, with new oem pistons, rods, crank, cams yada yada)

Time to take her for a rip... ahhh gotta love boost with the 4.30lsd! Only I got a little anxious and gave her some gas, shit, clutch starts to slip! better take it easy for a while untill this clutch gets broken in!

What's left:
-Rewire my knock sensors - throwing a 52... no ground wire on the knock sensors.. somebody just unhooked the grounds on em and bunched them up further up the heatsheilding
-Put on my exhaust - ya.. no exhaust sounded great into boost and then once that wastegate opens hell ya!
-put my hood back on

Oh yes, another small issue, for some reason my tach isn't working.. I just used the auto tach from the turbo car, would this be the issue? Do I need a manual tach or is something wrong?

Oh ya, and pictures!

If you are still using your NA gauge cluster, that is why your tach isn't working. You'll need to get a turbo gauge cluster or rewire the tach (I think those instructions are on dr jonez's website).

Dachande: ohh ic... I thought I could just switch over the tach itself. Ok, so I'll use the entire turbo gauge cluster and swap in my volt meter!

akito: Ya I know it's filthy... but most of those spots aren't dirt, it's the paint.. it's like the front half of the car had something spilled on it pretty bad, only really can tell under un-natural light

ViR2: Ya... I need to straighten out the vaccum lines... but my main priority right now was get the darn thing running!

the only thing that worries me is that the clutch is slipping even with a code 52. code 52 KILLS the power... with properly functioning knock sensors, you will be making LOTS more power... hopefully the clutch holds.

I'm not sure if you can just put a turbo tach in the na gauge cluster without having to change the resistors on it. Taking off the needles can leave room for error in not putting them back on correctly, so you could screw up where the needle sits. That is a big headache, that is why I suggested just buying a new gauge cluster since you'll probably find one for around the same price as if you found a turbo tach by itself. Good luck, you'll enjoy the car I'm sure.

you can just swap resistors on your na tach thats what i am doing dr jonz site has to values and resistors you must change

thanks guys! It's been a lot of fun doing this swap. I have developed a pretty severe coolant leak tho... I think it's from the thermostat housing that attatches to the block that has the water return on it, it seems to be running down the front of the engine from that location.

Ya I know the clutch is worrying me... I think I might just take er easy for now and save up some cash for an r154 and a nice clutch then I can really put the power to the ground... but right now at around only 4-6psi (boost leak.. cracked intercooler) it slips in 3rd-5th... not good at all with the code 52 ontop of that.. I'm hoping if I take her easy for a while and really break the clutch in for another oh.. 400km or so it should be able to grip a little better, I'm just hoping I didn't glaze it over too much!

IJ: I will be replacing the entire intercooler piping with hardpipes that go to the throttle body and an aftermarket front mount ic fairly soon here (need money)..

this is just so I can get the car back on the road so I can find a new job... yes that's right I ended up losing my job right before I started this swap... tight budget swap ftw!

Dachande: I have a full turbo gauge cluster sitting here.. but don't feel like rewiring for the volt meter, I would rather change the resistors in my non turbo tach and keep it in my non turbo cluster for now.. I thought I could just swap the tach itself (the whole gauge, electronics and all) but I guess not!
