Well decided to take my HUGE crank pulley to one of my machinest to modify it for me. (lighten it) since im not running ac, powersteering.

I was goin to buy a obx pulley, but i searched n read about it on here and deffinatly decided against it. so to keep a dampened pulley i had the original one modified. It weights a heck of alot less than it use too! and looks good

How much to do that? Are you going to have it balanced or was it balanced? Going to balance it with the crank or no?

You need xx mass to damp xx number of hp. So how do you really think this is a good thing to cut a pulley down that is dampened for a limited amount in the first place? Do you feel lucky with not having your engine dampened properly? Bad idea IMO and I think you should have purchased an ATI off the shelf unit. It would be lighter and you would be good for more than the OEM pulley as far as dampening.

the big thing is the dampner's rubber is made to dampen x amonte of weight so taken alot of weight off of it may cause it to not work proporly if you know what i mean

weight is not factor when it comes to dampener it is mass if the alstmers are set to the weight of the pully the it will be fine

but this is just chopped up stocker

I'm not familiar enough with the engineering behind these to work out what you need, but I do know that you require larger units for larger HP numbers.

Mind you, Toyota over engineered everything else about the car, so maybe these were overkill from the factory? I'm not sure I'd be willing to risk my engine on it. (Well, actually, I know damn well I wouldn't, which is why there is an ATI unit on my car right now!)

How much weight have you pulled off of it? We're getting into serious guessing territory here, but IF Toyota made it big enough for double the stock power levels, and IF you've reduced it's mass by half, and IF you're only making stock power, you should still be safe, right? That's a awful lot of IFs, though.

Anyone know what kind of damage it causes, or how the engine fails if one of these is insufficient?

That was my understanding it balances out the harmonics that sets up in the engine so it doesn't shake it's self apart. With a big heavy flywheel on one end and not much on the other end of the crank, like IJ said thrashed bearings.

wow I guess I didn't read enough before I got this done :(

I figured its still damped and balanced just lighter. . .

I'm in detroit , mi by the way.

Well, if it's going to trash bearings, that's really not *that* big of a deal if you do your own work, and it's not that difficult to fix if it does cause a problem. And bearings are cheap.

If you pay someone else to do your work, that's another story.

My friend wanted to get this done to the crank dampener on his race car but the machinist at a very reputable race shop in my area said that the heat from cutting the rubber would damage it so that the rubber would deteriorate more quickly over time.
