My mkIII went up in flames!!!

Not sure how, but yesterday going down the road at 35mph in 4th gear, my car caught on fire. Not sure how many of you have seen my car recently (right before the fire) but it was looking and driving its best. Fire Dept. said they believe it dealt with some kind of electrical short near the alternator. Only the right side of the engine bay was the only really damaged side when it comes down to the wiring and plastics but the left side is just really dirty.

Im gonna have pics up soon. None to very minimal damage was done to the exterior and there was no damage what so ever to the interior. My car has a very good body on it. Im either gonna part the car out or sale it as is for some one to drop their own motor in. I dont really have enough time or the other resources required to fix it.

This isn't an ad, just something to put out there that another clean supra bit the dust this week. Stay safe and enjoy yours.

Any thoughts, ideas, or questions??

Fire extinguisher.

Sucks man, hope you rebuild it rather than part it.

It's likely the alternator's post wasn't covered (I haven't seen many MKIIIs with the cover) and touched something metal :(

Toyota still sells the post covers new. I think it was like $8? Bad part is, there is a plastic ring that sits on the alternator post itself that this cover attaches to. The cover does not come with this ring. Jeff at Champ says its not a part number he can order. He thought it might be considered part of the wiring harness.

I saw a low miles MKIII at the KYANA meet last fall. It had the original post cover and ring on it. So, I'm going to have to come up with a creative way to keep the post cover on the post. I'm thinking a spot of superglue. That way, with a little force I can break it apart again without destroying the cover. I just don't know how it will stand up to the heat and the vibrations of the engine.

I actually found it on my Champion receipt:
Terminal cap 82823-22050 Price: $2.94!!

Now thats a steal! Sheesh, I should've bought about 20 of 'em and sold them on here for $10/ea. ;)

I'm glad my JDM motor came with the alt. post cap and it still holds well...And as IJ suggested..If you don't have the ring, just RTV the cap on.
