now for my first hurdle...

locating a nice mk2.

Good luck. Truly "nice" Mk2s are starting to skyrocket in price. Expect to pay AT LEAST $4,500 for a low mileage, rust free car.

im not looking for something that nice.. i just need no dents (i dont care about paint) and a blown engine/tranny.. and an OK interior... the rest
(brakes, engine, tranny) is getting swapped into the mk2, from my mk3.
(and possibly the 5lugs so i can use my sawblades too)

Unless you use adapters, which will force you to use high offset wheel (i.e. no lip), you'll find it cheaper to buy custom wheels that fit the 4 lug. A set of the 5 lug rear MS123 axles last time I checked were about $500 out of australia. Most of the front upgrades will force you into upgrading the brakes as well. Last time I thought about doing it I figure about $1300 to swap over to 5 lugs at the minimum
