My list of problems... Help wanted

1. Car is overheating after about 5 minutes of driving.

I have no fan shroud so I believe that could be part of the problem, but I just replaced all the coolant, and bought a new thermostat from toyota and I still have the problem. Im getting a koyo radiator in a couple weeks so I hope that solves most of it also. Im getting up and over 200 degrees in about 5 minutes, something isnt right I also have a titan 2mm mhg... dont know if that helps you guys with anything, but Ive heard a lot of bgh comments and I just dont see how I couldve blown it with how easy ive been on the car.

2. No power steering at Idle.
I really have no idea whats going on with that... as soon as the rpm's get up to 2k or more, I start getting power back. Also, even if im cruising with with rpm's below 1k Ill still have power steering. arghhh!!!!!!

Completely forgot to add that I burped the system twice... once on my old fluid, it still overheated so I flushed everything out... then burped it again.

there is something weird about my radiator though, the "flange" (dont know what to call it) where the rad cap goes on is turned sideways, not only that... but I have a stock radiator and tried to use my friend radiator cap off of his stock rad... and his wouldnt fit on mine :1zhelp:

I don't know what everyone else thinks but it might even be faulty ignition or timing. There are as many possibilities (SP) as there are questions about it.

I have a new clutch fan that Im going to install really soon.

Correct me if im wrong, but if the powersteering belt was slipping then wouldnt it do it worse at more rpm's and make noise? neither of which is the case.

I guess I need a new pump.

the rad cap is a common problem. Toyota, in their infinite wisdom, decided to slightly change their design on the rad midway thru production. my bros 88 cap is different from my 91 rad.

as far as the cooling problems iunno man. maybe a bad fluid coupler in the clutch fan, could be a blockage in between the rad and the ac condenser, could be your old rad has some blocked cooling passages.

for the ps, it could be a faulty idle up valve (happened to me and it pumped fluid into my intake mani!) could be a bad pump, mine did this also around the same time as the pump got burned out by lack of fluid (would have pressure higher in the rev band but nothing down low)

open your PS resevoir and and drag like a flathead screwdriver around in it. and pull up all the shit that sticks to it. Its prolly clogged

could be a LOT of things, i guess ust use elimination, check everything, and remember that it may be an engine problem that's causing overheating

same thing was happening to me, i had replaced the whole cooling sys., problem was, my oil pump was bad, so my motor got trashed, because my cooling system was working so efficiently that it masked the problem from me :-/ (so now, i'm known as 89jdm7m, because i had to get another motor, lol)

edit: also running no thermostat

idk... my car is down for a few weeks so I cant test this stuff out yet.


on a brigter note, it seemed like a perfect time to pull out a bunch of parts and do some polishing!

Sounds to me that you either have a faulty valve in the cooling system (thermostat or cap), the water pump is toast, the radiator is clogged, a giant air pocket in the system, or you have BHG on the way.

Also, check your timing, both ignition and cam. If they are way off the engine will heat quickly.

For the power steering... Sounds to me like you have a blockage in a line some where in the system or a hose has collapsed causing low pump rpm to not be able to run the hydraulics in the rack.

Also, be sure that you don't fill the power steering resv. with power steering fluid. ATF dextron 3 mercon of the equivalent is the only thing to use.

To flush it, simply take the hoses off the resv., dump. Install the resv. and refill.

Repeat untill you see bright red fluid.

I had a completely new cooling system, but my fan caught on my shroud and ripped it to pieces and i took it off, even on the highway i could not go faster then 70mph without seeing the needle start to climb over 1/2 way so i slowed down, and then i stopped driving it.

the shroud makes a huge difference. unless you're going dual electric fans or something, definately replace the shroud.

You know, maybe its because I have no heat emmitting emmision parts under the hood, but even when I turn off the electric fans on the hwy I can still run quite cool.

same here ^ in fact i won't get over 2/5 on the temp gauge... sometimes, if the car's cool when i start it, it won't even get over 1/3 after a 20 min drive across town

i didn't even know we're supposed to have one... i've never laid eyes on one EVER, and the only thing i have of the sort is the shroud for the driver-side (left) fog... the other is off for air flow to the intake (stock w/ drop in) and for the oil filter (relocated)

My money is on the radiator being clogged or a rad cap... feel around on the radiator for cool spots, and pressure test the cap...

As for the fan shroud...I ran w/out one and w/out an undertray for over a year on my NA, and it would never overheat...on my current turbo, there is no undertray, and the temp never really moves above the 2/5 mark...
