so i was tired of having to pick up/find my ipod when i wanted to change the song.. so after some thought and will power i decided to make it happen...

while thinking of a good location, i knew i didnt want it on the gauge cluster blocking any of my vitals or on the steering wheel due to a cluster-fuck-ugly look..

so i played around with different locations and it seemed that where the cig lighter area was perfect... so that was my choice

1.
obviously, i disconnected the power going to the cig lighter socket and taped the lead

2.
find a piece of scrap steel... or aluminum... or even plastic.. cut it out to about 2-3 mm smaller than the size of your ipod.. exactness isn't necessary

3.
punch or drill a hole in the center of the material you used...(if you want the ipod to mount lower or higher, offset the hole you punch either up or down) the hole is for better glue adhesion

4.
apoxy the steel/plasic/aluminum to the cig lighter(i hope you can figure out where)

5.
get some quality velcro.. like 3m if available... for ultimate stick/durability

6.
attach ipod to steel/plastic/aluminum using said velcro

7. (optional)
since i did not want my ipod to have a shock absorber... i added some apoxy to the inside of the lighter mechanism..(not the socket) so it would not slide in when i press the ipod buttons

*note*
i used an ipod mini.. definitely had a better fit than i think the full size one would..

i am very pleased... its a tight fit so it doesnt wobble at all, and the velcro allows quick separation for syncn' and use out of the car

please dont mind the shittyness of everything else... im waiting to figure out what im gonna do with the area under the radio... and i plan to add my lost lighter socket where the ashtray is, along with a switch to power my gps, which i plan to hard wire

tell you what, if you love the ipod for its convenience, you'd love my other upgrade/mod

auto dimming rear view mirror out of a cadillac... not only does it auto tint when someones behind you... its also bigger but still fits between the visors..

if i had to do it again i would've gotten the mirror with the compass in it

real easy install...

just plug it into the dome light power supply... granted you have to turn it on and off every night.. but not to worry its extremely low power consumption really allows you not to worry about it... i went 2 days with it on and no problem starting the car up..

though if you felt feisty enough, you could always run an ignition lead up to it

for what? the ipod or rear view mirror...

the ipod install was cheap... just the cost of the velcro $3.50
i would assume you had your own cig lighter and ipod... oh the steel i used was cut from i belive 22 gauge steel sheet i had kicking around

for the mirror install

the mirror i got from a junk yard $50
wiring, i used from the mirror. free

pics...

oh and dont forget this

make sure you grab the plastic trim that hides the wiring

also good to note... dont tell them its off a caddy... tell them its off a buick or something... probably save you 20 bucks

sorry for the shitty camera phone pics...

I come from a land down under
Bit of a problem there we don't have Caddies in Australia ;)

Any chance of pricing one at a dealership there?
(prefer new)

I had Lasik eye surgery back in 92 and get the halo effect from headlights at night this would help a ton.

yea, i could do that for ya... but im sure its big money for a new one....not to mention you'd also have to get a wire harness... and i doubt you'd be able to get one from a dealer as i imagine they never go bad...

a used on would be just as good, considering price and you'd get the harness..

im pretty sure you could find an auto dimming mirror down under... other late model cars have these mirrors also...

also a point worth making... is that there is also a light sensor facing forward(toward the windshield) so you can wire your high beams to auto off when it senses headlights... havent done this yet... as id have to figure out relays n such... but i assure you i will post with a how-to

They're made by Gentex. They're quite popular nowadays. My GM truck has autodimming rearview and sideview mirrors. One day I'll get around to putting one on the Supra but it's not often I drive it at night.

yes they are very common now-a-days

im a mechanic for a very busy shop and almost all late model cars have them aside from kia and hyundai or other base models..

should be very easy to find and well worth it.... now i just have to find a couple side view mirrors that will fit right in

My VW has the electrochromatic mirror, it F'ing rocks.

You should be able to find them from tons of cars, usually the high-end models.

When I priced it new at my local VW dealer, it was over $500 new.
