Argh man this is gettin old it seems that every week since SILV my car has a new noise......Here are two soundclips it's a loud clacking type of noise you can hear it pretty clearly. I'm 99% sure it's coming from under the valve covers. After the car is warmed the sound seems to fade away not all the way though. It's def a ticking and it gets faster as the rpms go up.. Do you think it could just be a valve loose? Someone told me it might be piston slap?

anyways thanks for listening ......

Hi Jen - What kind of pistons and when was it rebuilt? Oh...and what kind of oil, brand and weight wise?

They have like 5K on them! They don't seem to last long when they go bad I get a power cut similar to fuel cut so I don't think that's it but I guess I could check ...hmm I really don't think that's it....it sounds like a metal to metal noise

That sounds almost exactly what I have on my N/A. I took it as rodknock.

thanks to hells legion Im thinking it could've been a plug not firing since it sounds like its coming from the head. Pull the plug wires off one at a time and see if it goes away.

Im just guessing but maybe it could be piston slap as well. :dunno:

Stock pistons never rebuilt :nono: using valvoline 10-40 right now :icon_mad:

I'm thinking you may have a bad valve or you may have thrown a shim (not likely though)...you could check the valve clearances to find out.

Piston slap sounds a little different...kinda like a diesel when the motor is cold (mine does it). It's most common on the shorter forged pistons...JE's are notorious for doing it. It goes completely away when the motor is fully warmed up.

It's wierd sometimes it is really loud and then other times you can hardly hear it and yea as I said it disipates as the motor warms up....I think I need to check my valves I just hope it's not a piston that'd blow me hard :(

That sounds mechanical as well.

A spark plug wire can arc. gound on the head.

Also when I took a spark plug out, diddnt put it back in all the way. it made that noise.

Check all of them. Then check mechanical items. Maybe put a heavier oil in her? 15W - **?

You might have a sticky valve due to carbon buildup. Pull the plug wires off one at a time off the coil packs...if the noise stays, it's probably a valve sticking or needs adjustment. If the noise stops, rod knock is def possible. Rod knock will be most noticible at a certain RPM range...say 1500-2500.

Check you valve shim clearances if the noise stays when you pull the wires...change your valve cover gaskets while you're at it.

You could also try a thinner weight (say 0W or 5W-30) pure syn oil like Mobile 1...that will flow better in to your valves and bearings. The valve train may be a bit noiser overall, but you will get better lubrication. You can change back to a 10W-40 after a few thousand miles to quiet things down since you have an older motor...I would still use a syn oil though ;)

It's the ticking sound that's making me think valves...I wish I could hear it in person. Pulling the plug wires should tell the tale though ;)

besides, I'm pretty sure Jen babys that car and it's never gotten low on oil ;)

Haha...I was just watching the video from the Group dinner during SILV, when you did that...ummm...burnout...:biglaugh:, and I could clearly hear it when I was taping the video as well...I was like wtf...It does kinda sound like RK...:( I wish there were some way I could post it up (other than digi-taping the TV, lol)

I think that pulling the plug wires will give you some insight into what the problem is...hope it's not RK...:(.

I turned the volume way up and it sounds more like a "clack"...and it's deeper and more 1:1 with the rpm than I thought.
That's not good Jen :3d_frown:

Yellow - I'm gonna backup and lean more to what you were saying...It does sound like the beginnings of rod knock. When she pulls the plug wires, that should tell. Jen, I really, really hope it's not!

It sounds like Rod Knock to me. :3d_frown: I hope its not. but before I read all the replys thats the first thing I thought of. The 2nd video really is clear.

Still think the paint is cool.. Do the spark plug wire pull and keep us posted! And figure out how to post that burnout video I read about.
