Mounting Wideband Knock Sensors to your 7m 1j 2j.

Mounting wideband, non-resonant, flat response, knock sensors to your engine.

If you have ever tried to do this, you would have noticed that the stock sensors use a M12X1.25 thread, and most wideband sensors use a M8x1.25 stud. Toyota already has a solution.



There are at least 2 variations of this stud available through toyota.




Top.........90126-A0008
Bottom....90126-08046

The top stud in the picture is slightly to tall for a 1jz, but may work for some other setups.

Whats toyota charge for those? I used a couple banjo bolts and tapped the inside for my stud. Them bosch knock sensors came on alot of things, volvo, nissan, volkwagens, saab and others. Its a generic listen all bosch sensor. AEM has a post about the sensors and how to configure them, the poster found out that stock 2j sensor listens well in the 8200hz, but found the 2j knocks in the 6400hz range. Ive got them installed on my 2j, with series 2.

I am working on a MS3 setup.
I have 2 sensors, one from a 1ZZ corola, and one from a 1NZ prius. Both with the same part number. 89615-20090.

Whats toyota charge for those?

The studs are cheap, I dont want to know, the price of the sensor.
I stumbled across that thread a while back, definitely a good read.

Sensors are cheap on Ebay. I used some extra Volvo sensors I had kickin around, from a 7/9 series, and even the 8 series cars.

Yeah the bosh sensors are very common, I'm gonna give these denso sensors a try.

Just found 2 more sensors from a 2gr rav 4. It seems toyota uses this same sensor for all (most?) of their current motors, knock sense.

The rear knock sensor on the 7M barely fits behind the starter as it is...will the stud + sensor from Toyota fit at all?

Someone else is going to have to do some 7m testing (7m free zone). I think even with the stud, this setup is more compact. I dont know for sure it will fit on a 7m though. Feel like doing some testing? send me your address, ill ship out some used sensors, you can pick up the studs at toyota, and post your findings.? Just a thought.

Not polarity sensitive, its just a microphone. Which ever wire you pick as a signal, the other is the ground.

Just looked it up, the 2GR was the v6 in the 2009 rav4, sensor is a BECK/ARNLEY Part # 1581017, which rockauto sells for about $78 new. I need to read up more on how these would work with my AEM v1

Chip: I'll order the studs today (along with some other stuff) and I'll PM you my address. I have old knock sensors lying around so I'll measure how much they both protrude and/or post pictures.

Good to know wire polarity doesn't matter, figured as much as all the other two wire knock sensors I could find don't need power/ground they only had +/- back to ECU...still figured I'd be safe and ask haha.

edit: I'll be ordering two of both studs to figure out if there's a difference between the two in regards to fitment, or if both work and it doesn't matter.

The top stud in chips picture is 2.15" long, and the bottom is 2.12" long. For a 7M, they both thread in fully and there is enough threads on the outer part of both studs to tighten a nut down on the sensor. I think I prefer the long one as the large threads sit flush with the block, the other one is recessed a little bit.

Not sure what the thread pitch is for the outer threads/nut, but I had some lying around for my water pump and rear timing cover so I found some that fit and had an integral lock washer: part # 90179-08123.

They are REAL close to being the same length, but remember: the stock knock sensor has a connector plus a wire which adds to its length. I have an '87 and am barely able to plug/unplug the stock connector from the sensor, so there's more than enough room to install both the stud and the new sensor even with the starter in place. Might be a bit annoying to get your arm below the intake manifold, but possible.
