Mounting the innercooler away from the radiator, bad idea?

Slight sidetrack but related....
In the late 80's I worked as a fabricator on a Group A race team and one of my regular jobs was making brake duct vents from aluminium sheet and tube and while a simple part I spent a LOT of time making these in quantity as where they mounted was prone to damage....
Some "genius" on the team decided to have our guys in the road car division make a bunch of sets from fibreglass..... I took one look shook my head and walked off.
Mentioned my concerns to the boss which were dismissed, very next race one of our cars was black flagged after kerb hopping and exploding a glass duct and having the hose drag under the car
"I told you so" echoed in the shop for days after
