Monster Tach Install...

Ok, I just bought an Autometer Phantom 5" Monster Tach w/ Shift light for my supra... I have it mounted, and it has the power, ground, and illumination cables connected.... All i need now is to have the tach read RPM's.... I dont wanna tap into the wiring for the CPS in the bay. Anyone know wich cable i gotta tap into on the ECU side of the harness to get it to read?

Im reading the cygnus thing and it says that its the blue wire comming from the cps.... that thats the one that sends rpm signals to the computer. Its an 87 Turbo. Its a brand new efi harness so i dont wanna tap into the wires under the hood... I just did one hell of a clean up on the bay and id like to keep it like that. If anyone can tell me where on the ECU side of the harness to tap into id appreciate it. Im even contemplating pulling out the cluster and tapping into the line going to the tach but i've heard its a mission to pull the cluster out... besides, i have just enough cable to reach the ecu... might as well stick with that option.

and that works? If so, ill leave that as a last resort.... im really not in the mood of feeding another damn wire through the firewall... im running on 3 right now... Its cramped enough in that little damn hole as it is.

yep it works, BIC showed me when he finished up my motor swap. I dont blame you for not wanting to run another wire, its such an pain in the ass.

MA70witBoost: your catch can isn't going to be doing a whole lot over there near the exhaust. the can will get so hot that the vapors won't even condense, and they'll still make their way back into the intake tract, (via vaccuum).

move it over near the brake booster. keep it in as cool of a place as you can.

(and you might want to get an air filter on there ;))

i'd just use the wire that SupraCentral stated. (the green one)

a real easy way to get the wires through that grommet, is to use a metal coat hanger. i've never had a problem with it.

Here ya go, RPM1 is IGDA, I think and RPM 2 is IGF.
IGDA fires from the ecu every time a plug fires, IGF is the confermation signal back to the ecu to report that spark has happened. I'd use IGF.

I'm not sure why you need another large tach when the stock one works perfectly, to each his own I guess.

Here is the wire you tap to get a tach signal. The IG- connection (Just like Jayhall said)

Ok, I know where the diagnostic port is... I've known since it was first mentioned.... Only one question remains on my mind... What slot do I connect the wire to? Is any random slot with in the port good? Or is there a specific one I need?

And for the record, I know that the factory tachometer works fine and does the job... But I haven't been driving this car long enough to know how the revs sound. I wanted the shift light more than the tachometer but the Tach w/ light looks nicer than just the shift light. Hence why I got the tach. Pictures will be posted shortly... I guess I dont like the look of an empty interior. The more gauges the better. Expect 3 more smaller gauges like the ones on my A-Pillar to show up soon. Its good to have as much information as possible on your motor. Especially on a 7M.
