ME VS modded EVO 8

Well it wasn't a race, but it put some fearful thoughts into my head, and at the same time got rid of some of the "what ifs" floating around my head.

So Im driving along and I see this evo pulling out of the gas station. You can tell he's got gauges and an exhaust.

He's 8 cars behind me.

Amazingly all 8 go the other way as to me and the Evo.

Right turn. Stop light.

I turn, shortly after evo does too.

In typical ricer fly by I hear him step on it and get a run on me.

Through first Im 1 car back.

2nd 2 cars back.

3rd gear and whats this? 80mph? Im catching the EVO?

As soon as I start catching him, we both shut it down. (80 in a 35 isn't smart... DO'H!)

The guy stops up the road at a parking lot and me and him had a chat.

Its a 6 speed evo (not the cheapo) with a AEM tune (Chicago), 3" exhaust, and running 20psi.

I didn't think I did all that bad considering:
-He jumped my arse
-Im running 15 psi (set at 1 bar, but gauge reads 15)
-Besides my engine mods, Im only running a 57mm upgraded ct
-Hes got 1000 lbs on my car in weight

Then again...

It makes me wonder if my car didn't spool fast enough. Should I be making more power? Should I have beaten him? Should I have done this or should the car have done that?

What do you guys think?

I think Supras are faster in the top end than an EVO. AWD v. RWD and whatnot.

evos are amazing cars man, dont feel bad if your car couldnt catch up to an awd evo taht already had a run on you running that power. had it gone to 150mph yea you would have caught him but for a short run like that no chance

heh, there's a 300awhp evo 8 that wants to race me. he's been hunting me for the past four days. (since i've had my car back up and running) i'm on stock turbo. i'm hoping that if i up the boost to 15psi, that i'll be able to hang with him. my mods are in my profile. click my name, and "view public profile".

i'm being very, very hopeful.

Shaeff, you almost have the same mods as me, just smaler turbo and no major head work done to the engine.

Run him, and let us know but Im gonna have to put the bills on the evo my friend unless you hand him something on the hwy.

if i get the few bugs worked out by then, i think i can take him. he's not a very good driver. i'll boost my poor little stocker up to 16psi or so. and be very hopeful! haha. i'll let you know the outcome when he finds me

The evos actualy have a curb weight of 3,200pds same as the Sti's I know this because I almost bought one once and studied up on it. You did well then for being a heavier car. THe come stock with 276hp, brand new are closer to 300 now. I don't like the fact though they come stock running 19pds boost and where the turbo sits you can't put a bigger one on there. Thats a lot of boost for a small motor and turbo. Oh well good run.

you're kidding me... what, are their turbos the size of one of my nuts or something?

probably so. Has anyone seen the vr4 turbos? they be tiny!

The evo turbos are matched for spool & response VS massive HP.

Yes they run 20psi from the factory, but as the rpm goes up, Mitsu has the boost taper down to I think 16 or something like that.

Either way, that engine is reponsive as hell, no lag, and with what that guy had I would immagine he was pushing 350hp.

Theres a guy up here with an 2004 evo 6 spd. He got tired of people talking trash about it. He dumped around 10 grand in motor. Tube manifold, external wastegate, big turbo, injectors, etc. Heard it was pushing over 450 hp at wheels. Not sure, I know some guys say its faaast!
