Finally finished disassembling the GTE so I can take it in to be machined. I was completely (not)surprised to to find the BHG lurking under the head.

Long piece of rust goop I found sticking out of a coolant passage:

What I was surprised to find was that the number 4 connecting rod had been installed WITHOUT A BEARING!!!! How the HELL is that even possible? I'll snag a pic in the morning but seriously WTF? The bearing was not spun, there were no shavings to be found anywhere, it just flat wasn't in there. I must have stood in the garage staring at this abomination for several minutes in brain lock trying to make sense of it.

I don't know who's still reading this but if there is anyone still paying attention here's an update. I got a call from the machine shop today informing me that the crank is no good. The number 4 rod and journal were both way out of spec. Unfortunately this leaves me with only one option. My built NA motor is coming apart.

My NA motor has a lot of goodies on it that I can transfer over to the turbo motor so I'm taking all of it. In addition to the crank I'll be transferring over my cams and valve train, aluminum flywheel, and my complete MAFT Pro setup.

I hate losing the NA motor since I put a lot of work into it and it is a blast to drive but I think this is a good upgrade over all. My remaining parts will be frankensteined into the 5M in my MKII when I rebuild it. Not sure how yet, one build at a time.
