Marlin Crawler Shifer Seat Problem

So I bought a white poly shifter seat for my '88 R154 and tried to install it last night to no avail. Everything looks good, but the part is just a hair too big. I've done this before on my truck, so I know what I'm doing, it just doesn't fit.

Has anyone run into this before? Was there a difference in the R154 between the years that I don't know about? Anyone have any ideas?

Sorry about the bad pics. My phone was all I had handy.

I pushed a little but it just didn't want to go. I also compared it against what was left of the original and it was almost a mm larger in diameter.

I'll have MC send me another one and see what happens then...

Well I just talked to MC, they're gonna send me another one at no cost. If the new one doesn't fit, I'll try the sandpaper/WD40 route.

Mine did this too, but I just used the one I got from DM, I've still got the one from MC. Didn't think about sand papering it.

I had the same problem, I thought for sure it was the wrong bushing.

I got frustrated and really muscled it, then it popped right in.

mine took a good whack with a large socket to get in there...chipped a little off the side, but nothing that affected the contact with the shifter ball.

Well I went at it last night with some sandpaper and a bit more muscle and it went in no problem.

On a related note, I also replaced the shifter socket and did the SOGI shifter mod last night... HOLY SHIT that thing is awesome! I've got maybe 1 mm of play in my shifter now! For $20 and maybe an hour and a half of work, it just doesn't get any better!

And Kevin, I pm'd you back.

Yeah, this is probably one of the most frequently overlooked mods. It's cheap as hell, takes 2 hours (at most, see below) if you're extremely detail-oriented or 45 minutes if you're not, and makes a HUGE difference. I sat in my (not-running) car for like 10 minutes last night just throwing it through the gears after I finished just because it was so much improved.

The 2 hours that I spent doing this included the SOGI mod, and included removing all of the rubber that originally held the two shifter pieces of the shifter together, then polishing the lower shifter piece so it would look pretty.

Mine was a pain as well, but a little effort slid it right in place.

i think lube/grease and some muscle should do it. or get a mallet and bang it in :)

btw i just pm'd u :biglaugh:

^^^^ Same here. I also thought it was the wrong one, but with a little grease, and some muscle, it rotated around the pins and went it. Tight...Yes. But it fit in there with out modifying or sanding the bushing.
