i hope this marlin crawler tranny set can take hard lunch and gear banging. even though nothing will last long with my lead foot and my addiction to drag racing but hopefully it will last longer than my previous one because i am not ready to go th350 just yet,,

Thrust washer is a must on upgrade or rebuild.
The R154 is not bullet proof shock loading it will kill it if your 2JZ makes more then 6-700RW torque dont bother you will blow it up the only chance your R154 will have on a drag strip is multi plate clutch & locking the e-brake and pulling the slack out of the drivetrain

Someone on here has one...

Call up marlin if you have questions, but from what they told me a few years ago, it's the upgraded bearing plate, bearings, syncros, inspect gears and replace as needed, and fully blueprint. He's made replacements for the thrust washers, but he used to not to. He said the bearing plate flexing is what causes the slop allowing the impact on the thrust washer...

Offroading is far more brutal than drag racing....

Depends on the quality you'd want.

Basic rebuild - $500ish+parts. Blueprinted quality rebuild - $800ish + parts.

As of this morning, my first 5th gear sets are on their way to me. Should be here at the end of the week! I'll only be accepting 2-3 transmissions to rebuild at any one time.

but that car makes what? 450hp/550 torque maybe? A stock trans handles that fine.

Comparing the transmission back-to-back vs 100%, 16 year old R154 is a night and day difference.

We don't have an accurate measurement of power yet, but running 1 carlength behind a known 122-124 mph trapping Corvette, I'll call Jeff's supra a 120mph trapper, targa turbo 1992 (~3500 lbs + Jeff's maybe 150lbs + my 230lbs = ~3880lbs race weight) yields around 500-520 bhp.

I'm not saying he's setting any records for power output - but I will say he is above or on par with the overwhelming majority of people on here.

Really, a rebuild boils down to the following:

1) Does your transmission have slop in it now? Are you ok with that slop?
2) Do you want to be able to beat the ever loving hell out of your transmission, and know it's going to take it and ask for more?

Jeff is anything but easy on his car, that's for certain ;)

I was replying that a stock transmission can handle his power without issues and its hardly a high powered car putting the MC spec (bearing plate, thrust washer) to the test. Not a comparison of a Rebuilt trans vs a 16+ 100K+ mile trans.

If the car doesn't make more than 700hp, no point in saying that it works. The OEM trans is good for that. Heck, at 800 it was fine for me.

Someone needs to send a trans out to someone that has bigger power for testing.
