Well first off you will need a serial to usb to get the map-ecu to connect to your lab top unless you have a serial port on your labtop. You can purchase a serial to usb at radio shack, wal-mart, etc... At that point you will be able to upload the appropriate base mad to start tuning. Once you have uploaded the map you should be able to get the car to idle. Just remember that the base maps that come with the map-ecu are programmed to work with 550cc injectors or bigger. If you still have have stock injectors you will have to pull fuel out of the map by about 25% if you upload the 550cc base map. I would recommend you take it to the dyno to have someone that knows how to tune using a map-ecu. Plus you can monitor knock.

Unplugging the map-ecu and leaving the harness plugged might be interfering with the signal.

There is nothing wrong with the cable itself. Its the computer that doesn't recognize the driver for the serial to usb. What you need to do is find out what brand the serial to usb cable is and do a search for it on yahoo or google. For example, Prolific serial to usb driver. You can download the driver. Once you have done this the computer will recognize it and it will connect. If you go to control panels on the menu bar on your labtop and click on device manager it will show you if your serial to usb is connected. Another question is what Windows operating system do you have. The map-ecu came out back when windows xp was available. I had a problem with it losing connection when using Windows 7. So I had to use an old labtop that had windows xp and it worked just fine. If you don't have this option and this becomes a problem for you get on map-ecu forum and talk to map-ecu man and he should be able to help you with that. Also on the web site they have the latest version of the map-ecu software that you can download. Chances are you have an old version even if you just purchased it brand new.

Well look under the device manager in make sure its connecting to the computer. If its not then you need the driver downloaded to the computer. If it is connecting then its map-cal that is having a problem with windows 7. Try windows xp if you have access to it.

And just because it said on the package that it is compatible with windows 7 doesn't mean that you don't need to download the driver. My cable was compatible but I still had to download the driver.

Most USB adapters will not work with the MAP ECU. There is one that seems to work well that you can get at radio shack. If you go on the MAP ECU fourms they have a write up on which one works the best. Also before buying a different adapter go into the MAP-CAL and change the COM port that the software is using. try each setting mine used COM 4 for some reason. other times it uses com 3.

Yes another good point make sure that the right COM port is selected.

Here are the cables that are recommended:

Mine works on windows 7, I got it from compusa and I cant remember the exact brand but it was translucent blue and it will need a driver update to work with windows 7.
